A new asphalt plant designed to supply road projects started as part of the federal economic stimulus will open in Jessup next week.
Independence Construction Materials, based in Malvern, Pa., will open the new plant June 10 on Dorsey Run Road. The plant will provide aggregate and asphalt for road projects in Maryland and Washington, D.C., many of them funded through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The company’s projects include the first road work to be done through the federal economic stimulus — a road repair project along Route 650 in Montgomery County.
The Jessup plant, which is the company’s largest, includes three 300-ton storage silos and can create up to 500 tons of asphalt per hour. The company is using “green system” technology that will help reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse emissions.
County Executive Kenneth Ulman praised the company for its green efforts and said he was glad it was opening a plant in Howard County.
“With their excellent reputation for quality products and our enviable location between Baltimore and Washington, we believe this is the ideal place for (Independence Construction Materials) to serve its customers and grow its business,” Ulman said in a statement.
The company operates a total of eight asphalt plants and six aggregate quarries in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
