A new charity fund in honor of former Columbia Association President Maggie Brown has been established through the Columbia Foundation.

The Maggie Brown Endowment Fund is intended to support nonprofit organizations in the community that provide activities and services for young people. Brown, who stepped down as CA president at the end of April, will get to advise the foundation board on what programs should receive the money.

"Youth are our replacement and we should be busy cultivating them," Brown said in a statement. "Having this fund at the Columbia Foundation will help me to do that."

The fund was established by CA and up to 5 percent of the endowment total can be disbursed each year, as long as the fund remains above $10,000, according to foundation officials. They declined to say how much was initially contributed to the fund.

Brown started her career with CA in 1982 as a sales manager and became president in 2001. She has lived in Columbia for 38 years and has served on numerous boards and foundations, including being a trustee for the Columbia Foundation.

The foundation was started in 1969 and has distributed more than $10 million in grants to nonprofit groups in the human service, arts and educational fields. Individuals can contribute to the Maggie Brown fund or learn more about it at www.columbiafoundation.org or by calling 410-730-7840.
