One of the partnerships will provide opportunities for instrumental music students, while the other is intended to provide support to South Asian and Indian students and families.
Through a partnership with the U.S. Army Field Band, students will be able to listen to and learn from the Army ensemble.
Army Field Band musicians will demonstrate instruments to prospective band students and provide tips to student musicians regarding performance, musical interpretation and technique, according to the partnership agreement.
The field band will be invited to perform at school music conferences, high school band concerts and jazz festivals, according to school officials.
Under a separate partnership with Counselors Helping (South) Asians/Indians Inc., the school system hopes to build understanding and appreciation of South Asian cultures and more effectively address the needs of local families of South Asian heritage.
CHAI is a nonprofit organization that provides outreach, referral and educational services to families in the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan area.
Through the partnership, CHAI will provide information to the school system on issues affecting the South Asian community. The organization will provide workshops and presentations for school counselors and other staff members regarding these issues.
The organization also will help identify interpreters to work with the school system when necessary, and speakers to participate in school events for students and parents. The organization will consider selecting students to serve on its board of directors.
