Howard County police are warning residents to secure garages and sheds as burglaries typically spike during summer months.

Residents frequently leave garage doors open while doing yard work or spending time outside, police said. Burglars often use this opportunity to steal property from the garage and gain access to the interior of the home, police said.

In 2008, county police responded to 122 residential burglaries of garages and sheds. Of those, 71 had no forced entry, police said. July and August had the highest number of garage and shed burglaries with 15 cases in each month, police said.

As of May 31, there had been 50 burglaries of garages and sheds, police said.

Police advise residents to keep all doors locked and ensure that the door leading from the garage to the interior of the home also is secure.
