No one was injured, but residents of a three-story apartment complex in Elkridge were relocated Thursday afternoon after a fire burned through their building.

Firefighters were called to the Sherwood Crossing apartment complex, in the 6700 block of Old Waterlook Road, about 1 p.m. after getting a report of a fire in one of the buildings, said Battalion Chief Eric Proctor. They encountered heavy flames on the second and third floor of the three-story building that were extending to the roof area, and it took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

About 28 units were affected by smoke, fire, water, or a combination of the three, he said. The building is uninhabitable and residents are being relocated with the help of the building’s management and the American Red Cross.

No residents or firefighters were injured in the incident, Proctor said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but investigators are looking into it, he said.

As I came home from work I was surprised to see the entrance of my apartment complex to be blocked off by Police. I had heard a ton of sirens when I was at work but never believed they were heading to my place. The building that was caught on fire is two buildings behind mine. I spoke with the lady that made the 911 call and thank god for her. She said her and her friends ran and banged on all the doors to help get people out! She even carried someone's baby to safety. I captured the aftermath with my camera. My heart goes out to those effected.
