An Ellicott City woman was in stable condition Wednesday after being struck by a car that jumped the curb while she was walking her dog near her home, according to Howard County police.

The collision occurred at about 8:53 a.m. Wednesday when Irene Giarratono, 62, of the 4200 block of Red Bandana Way, was walking her dog on the sidewalk of Gray Rock Drive and Red Bandana Way. A Honda Civic jumped the curb and struck Giarratono and her dog, police said.

The driver of the Honda Civic, Joel Mann, 28, of the 3400 block of Plum Tree Drive, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said. He was not injured.

Giarratono was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was listed in stable condition, police said. The dog was taken to a local animal hospital, and was listed in good condition.
