For those who have heard rumors circulating that City Councilman Frederick Smalls plans to run for the Prince George's County Council in 2010, Smalls said they are not true.

However, Smalls did admit that up until four months ago, he had "strongly considered" running for the District 1 seat on the council that is being vacated by Councilman Thomas Dernoga, who plans to run for the county's State's Attorney office.

"I considered it seriously, but decided not to run for personal reasons," Smalls said. "I had been approached in the 2006 election by the county executive (Jack Johnson) and others in the county to run, but I decided then not to run for personal reasons."

Last month, Dernoga's former aide Mary Lehman announced her plans to seek the District 1 County Council seat.

Smalls said he plans to finish out his City Council term but, after that, he's not sure if he will seek reelection in 2010.

"There are other things I want to do that are not connected to politics, but that will still allow me to contribute to the Prince George's community," he said. "But all options are still on the table. There's lots of time between now and 2010."
