police on a 13.5-mile chase through Sykesville, Marriottsville and West
Friendship on Saturday.
Sykesville officers arrested Brandon Del
Re Shipe, 24, of the 12000 block of Sudbury Court, Clarksville, early
Saturday and charged him with driving while under the influence (two
counts), eluding police on foot (two counts), failing to stop for an
officer, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to stop
at a red traffic signal (two counts), failure to stop at a stop sign
(two counts), reckless driving, negligent driving and other charges,
according to court documents.
Shipe drove more than 70 mph at times during the chase, which lasted 16 minutes, court documents stated.
The
chase began about 1:17 a.m. when Sgt. Shawn Kilgore of the Sykesville
Police Department spotted a 2006 Chevrolet truck as it slowed, then
stopped for about a minute at a yellow flashing light on northbound
Route 32 at Springfield Avenue.
Police said Kilgore followed the truck onto Springfield Avenue toward the Warfield Commerce and Cultural Center.
The
truck began to swerve, and Kilgore activated his flashing lights. The
truck stopped at the traffic circle at Springfield and Warfield
avenues, but when Kilgore approached the vehicle, it sped away,
according to court documents.
The vehicle turned onto southbound
Route 32, the left onto Raincliffe Road, striking a grass hill. It
continued onto Slacks Road, then Arrington Road in the wrong lane,
police said.
The vehicle continued on Arrington Road, passing a
stop sign at Brangles Road, then turned onto Marriottsville Road No. 2,
where it struck a guardrail, crashed into a ditch, then continued onto
Marriottsville Road into Howard County, according to court documents.
The
vehicle turned right onto Route 99 toward West Friendship, failing to
stop at a red traffic light, according to the documents.
Howard
County police deployed stop sticks to blow out the tires of the truck
at routes 32 and 99, but it continued south on Route 32.
After a turn onto Frederick Road, the vehicle was pulled over, but then Shipe got out and fled on foot, police said.
He
ran into a state police cruiser, then ran into Kilgore, striking his
chin, according to court documents. Officers noticed “red, glassy,
bloodshot eyes” and an odor of alcohol, according to court documents.
Shipe recorded a .15 blood-alcohol content level on a Breathalyzer test. The legal limit in Maryland is .08.
After being charged, Shipe was released on a $7,500 bail. His trial in District Court is scheduled for Jan. 13.
The chase followed the department’s high-speed chase policy, said Sykesville Police Chief John Williams.
“The
on-duty supervisor had the authority, and it’s based on roadway,
traffic conditions and the need to take the individual into custody,”
he said.
