On Nov. 7, I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Ulcerative Colitis and Cohn's Disease Research Shoot Out Free Throw and Silent Auction. The turnout, support and generosity shown at this event were unbelievable!
Everyone who attended was able to meet the inspiration for this event, Jacob Krause, who was diagnosed with colitis in April. The issues he has had surrounding this disease are tough for anyone, but to a 9-year-old they can be life-changing. Jacob is an amazing kid who continues every day to overcome these obstacles.
What continues to amaze me most are his parents, Jill and Dave. Not only have they supported Jacob in his struggles, researched the best course of treatment and fought a good fight against the disease, but they have showed Jacob and his three siblings how to make lemonade out of lemons. They have reminded us all how we can lead by example and inspire our children to help others.
Through the dedication of the Krause family and the support of others including Chapelgate Academy, County Executive Ken Ulman, NBA All-Star and broadcaster Phil Chenier, Wizards announcer Steve Buckhantz and sportswriter David Dupree, they exceeded their fundraising goal. It was clear to me that every person who attended this event, both children and adults, had a great time.
I am truly thankful to live in a community that supports our children and to have friends like the Krauses, who inspire us all.
Thanks to the Krause family and all who made this event a true "slam dunk."
