Ellicott City man dies after collision on icy ramp

An Ellicott City man died Monday from injuries sustained in a collision Saturday on an icy ramp between routes 100 and 29, in Ellicott City.
The man, Nian Chen, 47, of the 3000 block of West Springs Drive, was driving west on the ramp from Route 100 to Route 29 at about 9:15 p.m. when he lost control of his 2008 Honda Civic. Chen’s vehicle spun and came to a stop against a guardrail, police said.
Chen was standing outside his vehicle when a 2003 Ford F-350 pickup truck lost control on the same ramp and struck him. The Ford, driven by Nicholas Pullin, 20, of the 6000 block of Belmont Woods Road, in Elkridge, then traveled down an embankment adjacent to southbound Route 29. Pullin was not injured, police said.
Chen was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died of his injuries Monday, according to police.
The icy roadway also proved problematic for emergency vehicles responding to the collision, as a police vehicle slid into the side of an ambulance at the scene, police said, adding that no injuries occurred in that collision.
