Most county offices, including senior centers, the health department, and recreation and parks centers will be closed from Dec. 28 to 31 as county employees take mandated unpaid leave.

The furlough days, the result of county budget cuts, will not affect emergency service operations.

Regular trash and recycling collection will continue and the county landfill will remain open.

Howard County Transit will operate on a holiday schedule. For the schedule call 1-800-270-9553.

County offices also will be closed for Christmas on Dec. 25 and New Years Day. There will be no trash pick up those days and Howard Transit will not run.

Parking meters will be free on both holidays.

During the furlough week, the county’s Community Action Council will move operations to the Dasher Green Head Start Center and the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center.

The Head Start Center is located at 6680 Cradlerock Way, in Columbia.

The Multiservice Center is at 9105 All Saints Road, in North Laurel. It will remain open during the furlough days.

Howard County Public Libraries also will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.

On Dec. 31, only the Central Branch Library will be open, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
