H1N1 vaccine clinics to be held at Howard General

Howard County General Hospital is holding three H1N1 vaccine clinics in coming weeks.

The clinics are scheduled on Feb. 27 and March 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. The clinics are open to everyone older than 3. Children between the ages of 3 and 9 can get a second dose of the vaccine at the March 27 clinic.

The clinics will be held at the hospital's Wellness Center, at 10710 Charter Drive, Suite 100, in Columbia.

Children younger than 9 must get two doses 28 days apart. The hospital does not have a vaccine for children under 3 years. Children ages 3 to 4 years old can only get the nasal mist form of the vaccine.

Vaccines cost $10 and payment may be made by cash, check or charge. Registration is preferred, but not required. For more information, call the hospital's Wellness Center at 410-740-7601 or go to www.hcgh.org.

County offers series on surviving recession

Howard County's housing department will host a three-part series for residents on "Surviving the Recession."

Sessions include:

* Savings: Making a Little Into Much Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Oakland Mills Village Center, The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, in Columbia.

* Home ownership: Securing Your Most Valuable Asset March 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Room 6, in Columbia.

County seeking vendors for annual GreenFest

Howard County officials are looking for vendors and exhibitors for the third-annual GreenFest April 17.

Those with information on green products, ecological home cleaning, lawn care, alternative energy and water conservation are encouraged to apply.

Nonprofit organizations will be charged $25 per space and commercial businesses will be charged $35. Preference will be given to local businesses and organizations promoting environmentally friendly goods and services.

GreenFest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Howard Community College's Burrill Galleria at 10901 Little Patuxent Pkwy., in Columbia.

Salvation Army receives $37,500 in grants

The Salvation Army Howard County Service Center recently received $37,500 in grants from the Horizon and Columbia foundations.

The Horizon Foundation, which promotes health and wellness in Howard County, donated $30,000 for the Salvation Army's Utility Turn-Off and Eviction Assistance Program.

The grant runs through the end of the year.

Columbia Foundation trustees awarded an additional $7,500 to the Howard branch of the Salvation Army, which has operated here since 1965.

The Salvation Army provides crisis intervention for residents facing eviction or utility turn-off, or who need food, clothing and medication.

Between October 2008 and October 2009, the Howard County Service Center helped 4,351 people with needs ranging from eviction to energy assistance, social services and seasonal assistance.
