In anticipation of the snowfall predicted to hit Laurel today, Laurel Mayor Craig Moe declared a snow emergency effective 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. When the city is under a snow emergency, certain parking restrictions take affect, and snow removal ordinances need to be followed.

During a snow emergency, parking is not allowed on the side of streets where there are even-numbered addresses. According to city spokesman James Collins, before cars parked illegally in snow emergencies are towed, Laurel Police attempt to identify and locate the owners. To find a car that has been towed, call the Laurel Police at the non-emergency number, 301-498-0092.

Cars that are towed will be issued a parking violation, and the owners of cars that are impounded will have to pay a fee for storage.

A city ordinance requires homeowners to shovel all public sidewalks around their property within 12 hours after the snow stops falling. Also, according to city officials, it is a violation of city code to throw snow into the street when clearing off cars, driveways and sidewalks.

During a snow storm, city officials said homeowners should check that their downspouts, drains and sump pump discharges are free of snow to allow for proper drainage, and to check that fire hydrants near their homes are cleared of snow.

For more information on snow removal, call the Department of Public Works at 301-725-0088.
