A 43-year-old Elkridge man was sentenced Monday to three years in
prison for attacking his girlfriend after she had evicted him from the
apartment they shared.
Donald Joseph Scallio, formerly of the 6000
block of Old Washington Blvd., was sentenced in Howard County Circuit
Court to seven years in prison, with all but three years suspended,
after he pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault and one
count of resisting arrest. Scallio had also initially been charged with
attempted first-degree rape.
Senior Assistant State's Attorney Susan
Weinstein said the woman had been waiting for Scallio to come to the
apartment to pick up his belongings one night last August, but had
fallen asleep.
After hearing a noise and seeing Scallio trying to pry
open a window, the woman attempted to leave her apartment. Scallio
forced her back inside, threatened her with a knife, told her to take
off her clothes and put his hands on her neck, Weinstein said.
During
the assault, the woman was able to dial 911, but could not speak.
Police responded to the call, and Scallio was arrested after a brief
struggle that ended with police subduing him with a stun gun.
