The Laurel Civic Improvement Committee, the same committee that has brought to Laurel a bike rodeo and ice cream social, a spring flower mart and the city's first dog show, hosts an open house that had crowds of people filling the Laurel Municipal Center March 8. The annual event is an opportunity for elected officials and city staff to meet and greet the public, while local groups and organizations, businesses and Scouts get a chance to spread the word about what they do. Gayle Snyder, Laurel City Council President, chairs the committee and helps pull the event together.

This year, the Pallotti Jazz Band performed a set in the council chambers and face painters decorated willing cheeks with flowers and animals while a balloon artist twisted whimsical swords and crowns from ordinary balloons, to the delight of kids that waited in line. Hector the Fire Safety Clown walked the halls, as well as the Chick-Fil-A cow mascot and two of Sesame Street's beloved residents, Elmo and Cookie Monster.
