As president of the Community Action Council of Howard County, which administers the Head Start program, I enjoyed reading Lindsey McPherson's article on school readiness.
Head Start promotes school readiness for children from low-income families by enhancing their social and cognitive development through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services.
I am very pleased about the reporting that acknowledges the fruit of the hard work of Head Start teaching staff: an increase in scores of low-income children entering kindergarten.
The Head Start curriculum as well as our targeted summer enrichment program are designed to prepare low-income children to perform on the same level as their counterparts who have enjoyed private education. As a matter of fact, our Summer Enrichment Program, which is sponsored by the Ellicott City Sunrise Rotary Club, was developed specifically to prepare children entering kindergarten.
Recognizing the vital role of preparing children and families for transition to the public school system, Head Start has and continues to provide a high-quality educational and social program.
