Jackie and Brian Brewer, employees of The Greene Turtle, in Columbia, have announced that they raised $12,400 through raffles, donations and a silent auction to support their niece, Sarah Brewer, who has neuroblastoma. Funds also went toward the Childhood Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation. The establishment also donated 10 percent of the day's revenue, which totaled more than $1,000.
Glenelg Country School junior Alexis Monroe was recognized for her international efforts by the House of Representatives on April 9. U.S. Rep. Darrel Issa, of California, submitted Monroe's 2007 and 2008 speeches to the Congressional Record for her work to receive recognition as an example of United States philanthropy in aiding those in other countries who need assistance. During Glenelg Country School's annual International Dinner and Fashion Show Fundraiser, Monroe, who is of Lebanese descent, raised $5,300 to help with ambulance purchases for the Lebanese Red Cross.
Geetha Jayaram, a customer at the Ellicott City branch of The Columbia Bank, won a $1,000 certificate of deposit during the Maryland Saves Roll in the Dough saving campaign, which coincides with American Savings Week held nationwide in the last week of February. The Columbia Bank was the Maryland financial institution with the highest number of participants, new savings type accounts opened and amount of new deposits.

Two Columbia locations and the Marriottsville location of The Goddard School received special recognition at the school's annual convention held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa, in Palm Springs, Fla., April 9-12. Sheeba Mathew, the owner of the Marriottsville location on Brighton Run Court, received several awards including the Occupancy Award and the Bullseye Award. Patty Konecke, the owner of the Columbia location on Quarterstaff Road; and Sandra and Ross Flax, the owners of the Columbia location on Columbia 100 Parkway, all received the Occupancy Award. Both of the schools in Columbia are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

FIRN, a firm offering referral, immigration and employment counseling, interpretation services and literacy programs to the foreign-born, in Columbia, has received a $5,000 donation from State Farm Insurance, to be used for a project that will help those in Howard County adjust to life in the United States.
Joseph Smith, a resident of Howard County and a managing partner for Owings Home Services, a residential remodeler in Eldersburg, recently attended a green building seminar in March, held at the Home Builders Association of Maryland (HBAM) offices, in Baltimore. Smith received green certification from HBAM for his efforts to be environmentally aware in the remodeling industry.
