Michelle Maupin, whose 2005 racial harassment lawsuit against the Howard County Board of Education and Centennial High School leaders was resolved through a $254,000 settlement in late April, said her struggles with the system are not through.

Maupin, who now teaches at Wilde Lake High School, said May 5 she plans to file a second lawsuit against the system.

Although she declined to offer specifics, she said she continues to experience "retaliatory behavior" that includes unwarranted letters of reprimand in her professional file and instances of being docked half a day's pay for leaving school for short periods of time to attend to legal matters related to her lawsuit -- something she said is protected under her contract.

School board chairman Frank Aquino and schools spokeswoman Patti Caplan said officials have no information about additional legal action Maupin might take against the system and therefore could not comment.

"At this point, we don't have any information about a second lawsuit," Caplan said. "We wouldn't comment on any issues relating to personnel matters."
