Howard County rescue workers responded to a late-night fire June 17 that heavily damaged a Kings Contrivance house.

No one was injured in the blaze at the one-story, single-family detached wood-frame house in the 9600 block of Sea Shadow in the Huntington neighborhood, said William Mould, a spokesman for the county Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

Forty-five firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 11:20 p.m. and had the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes, said Mould, who added that a woman in the house at the time of the fire fled without assistance.

The woman told rescue workers she was first alerted to the fire when she heard a crackling sound, according to Mould, who said smoke detectors in the house were in working order.

Fire officials classified the fire as accidental and believe it originated from the area of the front porch, Mould said. Damages are estimated in excess of $400,000, he added.

Sea Shadow resident Richard Gordon said he heard sirens from his house at about 11:30 p.m. and went outside and saw flames shooting through the roof of a nearby house.

Gordon and roughly 50 other onlookers gathered to watch as responders from multiple area fire crews extinguished the blaze. The crowd dispersed by 1 a.m., he said.

An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect date of the fire.
