Sallie Waltz Simpson, of Columbia, died Sept. 3, 2008, at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a lengthy illness. She was 66.
Mrs. Simpson was born Sept. 30, 1941 in Washington, D.C., to the late Waldo E. and Doris S. Waltz. She graduated from the University of Maryland with bachelor's degrees in history and psychology, and a master's degree, with high honors, in clinical psychology.
In her early career, Mrs. Simpson worked as a research and clinical laboratory technologist at Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and Johns Hopkins University.
While working on her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, she held teaching assistantships and research assistantships.
Her health forced her into early retirement, but she subsequently taught stained glass courses for Howard County and participated in many juried craft shows and galleries on the East Coast.
Mrs. Simpson was an avid reader, artist, animal lover and historian. She was best known by her friends for the courage and strength she exhibited in fighting an illness that affected her throughout her adult life, and for her enthusiasm in every endeavor.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Dr. Mark Simpson.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Cedar Ridge Community Church, 2410 Spencerville Road, Spencerville, MD 20868.
