Doris B. Orth

Doris Bourne Orth, of Baltimore, and a former resident of Ellicott City, died May 13, 2009. She was 81.

She was born May 5, 1928, in Alberton, later called Daniels, to Eva Stump Bourne and Olin Charles Bourne Sr.

Not long after graduating from Ellicott City High School, she married Louis E. Ralls Sr.

She later married Harold Lee Orth.

Mrs. Orth, who worked for the Maryland State Roads Department in Baltimore, loved to sing. She could be heard singing at church, weddings and the State Roads' choir. She was an excellent seamstress who made clothes, stuffed animals and dolls for her children, grandchildren and other family members. A favorite pastime was going to Atlantic City to play the slots.

Mrs. Orth was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bourne Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years; her daughter, Nancy Ralls and her husband, Donald; her son, Louis E. Ralls Jr. and his wife, Alice; her granddaughters, Heather Miller and her husband, Larry, Melissa Wersocki and her husband, Oleg, and Christina Ralls and friend Aaron Clark; and her great-grandchildren, Corrine and Colby Miller, Owen Wersocki and Xander Fishinger; her sisters, Alma Duvall, Muriel "Susie" Bourne, Jane Derrick and Eva "Bunny" Weigel; and a brother, Edward Bourne.

Services were provided by Evans Funeral Home, in Parkville. Interment was at Holly Hills Memorial Garden, in Middle River.

Carroll F. Ireland

Carroll Ferdinand Ireland, of Ellicott City, died May 18, 2009, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was 97.

Born May 20, 1911, in Baltimore, he was the son of Richard Moran and Emma Beyer Ireland. He was the husband of Doris Campbell Ireland (Appleby), who preceded him in death.

Mr. Ireland worked as a steam engineer. He had been a Mason since 1937, a member of the Scottish Rite and Boumi Temple.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Moran Ireland; and a grandson, Christopher J. Schuhly.

He is survived by daughter Doris Carol Schuhly, of Sharpsburg; grandchildren Dr. William R. Herzog, Richard Carroll Herzog, Melissa Habert and Ernest Schuhly; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held May 23, 2009, at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, in Sykesville. Interment was at the Mt. View Cemetery, in Marriottsville.

Betty Taylor

Betty "Boop" Miller Scocco Taylor, of Ellicott City, died May 16, 2009, at her home. She was 72.

Born Aug. 6, 1936, in Ellicott City, she was one of 15 children born to John and Jessie Miller. She was the wife of Donald Taylor, who died Feb. 4, 2008.

She retired from the telephone company after many years of service. She was a seamstress of many facets, quilting, making dresses and costumes for grandchildren and enjoyed anything that involved sewing.

Mrs. Taylor also took up painting and playing the organ. She was a member of Second English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and by brothers Bobby, Monroe, Charles and Leonard Miller.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Laurie Scocco, of New Windsor, Victor and Jill Scocco, of Pasadena, Nick Taylor, of Crownsville; her grandchildren, Melanie, Amanda, Megan and Ryan Scocco; her stepson and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sandy Taylor, of Crownsville; her step-grandson, Nick Taylor, of Crownsville; her sisters, Jessie Williams, of Sykesville, Jenny Williams, of Tennessee, and Mary Harrison, of Oklahoma; and her brothers, George Miller, of Texas, Stanley Miller, of Lisbon, Eddie Miller, of Keymar, Frank Miller, of Westminster, Tommy Miller of, Taneytown, Norman Miller, of Oklahoma, and Kenny Miller, of Ellicott City.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, in Sykesville. Interment was in Lake View Memorial Park.

Ernest F. Miles

Ernest Franklin Miles, of Naples, Fla., and formerly of Ellicott City, died May 16, 2009, at Georgeson House Hospice, in Naples. He was 73.

Mr. Miles was born on May 23, 1935, in Ellicott City. In 1953, he was part of the first graduating class of Howard High. He went to the University of Maryland and graduated with a bachelor's degree in agronomy.

He was in the supermarket industry, both in wholesale and in retail, and owned two supermarkets in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Miles retired in 1995 in Millsboro, Del., and later moved to Naples.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Gilbert Miles and Ann Elizabeth (Basler); and a brother, Eugene Miles.

Mr. Miles is survived by his wife, Constance A. Flood Miles; his daughter, Denise Flood; his son-in-law, Michael L. Ridgard; his granddaughter, Krista Flood-Ridgard; his brother, John Miles; and his sister, Berthann Miles Martin.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 23, 2009, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Fulton. Interment will be at St. Paul's Church cemetery.

Daniel F. Abeel

Daniel "Danny" Francis Abeel, of Ellicott City, died May 7, 2009, at Howard County General Hospital. He was 73.

Mr. Abeel was born Oct. 29, 1935, in Washington, D.C.

In 1953 he graduated from Northwestern High School and in 1957 he earned his bachelor's degree in speech and public relations from the University of Maryland.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He also liked his pets, the Washington Redskins, going to Ocean City, eating Maryland steamed crabs, chocolate and visiting Civil War battlefields.

Mr. Abeel was also a local supporter of wildlife and humane society organizations.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Abeel.

Mr. Abeel is survived by his wife, Irene Mary Abeel, of Ellicott City; four children, Daniel R. Abeel, of Warrington, Va., Elaine M. Abeel, of Kent Island, Eileen M. Abeel, of Ocean City, and Douglas C. Abeel, of Oakland, Calif.; his sister, Evelyn Sheehy-Goldenberg, of Gaithersburg; and grandchildren Jeremy, Hannah, Elyse and Christian Abeel.

Visitation was Friday, May 15, 2009, at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd., in Elkridge, with funeral services at the funeral home later that day. Interment was at Meadowridge Memorial Park, in Elkridge.

Memorial donations may be made to the Howard County Humane Society.

Sarah Knowlton

Sarah Knowlton, of Montgomery County, formerly of Columbia and Ellicott City, died May 8, 2009, at her home at Friends House in Sandy Spring. She was 75.

A 2004 graduate of Potomac Massage Training Institute, she flourished later in life using her creative energies as a massage therapist. Massage also focused her talents for healing and connecting with others.

She is survived by a sister, Ellen Coulter; four daughters, Lise Sipocz, Amy Swancar, Judy Sperka, and Holly Thompson; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and by many friends.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting, 17715 Meeting House Road, Sandy Spring.

Emma E. Linnemann

Emma E. Linnemann, of Ellicott City, died at Howard County General Hospital on May 6, 2009. She was 105.

She was born March 27, 1904, in Barmstadt, Germany, to Carl Langhinrichs and Marie Sahlmann.

Mrs. Linnemann was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Linnemann; and son-in-law, Jim Skroupa.

She is survived by her children, Margarete Skroupa, and Robert B. and his wife, Johanna Linnemann. She is also survived by three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.
