Thomas F. Bolton Sr.

Thomas Fenton "Tommy" Bolton Sr., 88, a resident of Laurel for 67 years, died June 6, 2009 at the Hospice of the Chesapeake in Harwood.

Born April 3, 1921 in Maryland, he was the son of the late Harry and Leola (Carter) Bolton. He joined the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He served with the 8th and 15th Air Force, 376th Bomb Group (Liberandos), 515th Bomb Squadron in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. His unit received 15 presidential citations. He returned to the United States on presidential orders to become an engineer on the B-29s prior to deployment to the Pacific Campaign. He was stationed in Alamagordo, N.M., where he witnessed the first atomic bomb detonation. As a result of the use of the atomic bomb, the war ended before deployment of the B-29s.

After an honorable discharge from the military, he earned his journeyman certificate as a plumber. He left this field to join the Fort Meade Fire Department, then joined the Friendship Airport Crash and Rescue Service, which later became Baltimore Washington International Airport. He worked his way up to acting fire chief of BWI Airport, retiring on medical disability in 1981. During this time, he also worked part-time for 35 years as a forest warden for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources; and was a founding member and first assistant chief of the Laurel Rescue Squad, member and chief of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department; and adjunct faculty in fire science at the University of West Virginia. His memberships included the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Maryland Fire Chiefs Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Chesapeake Winnies (Winnebago International Travelers Club), where he served as vice president. He dedicated his life to serving the Laurel community and received numerous awards and citations for his work in fire service. He was inducted into the Prince George's County Fireman's Hall of Fame.

His son-in-law, John Starliper, preceded him in death.

Mr. Bolton is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gladys Bolton; daughter Patricia Starliper; son Thomas Bolton Jr. and his wife, Mary; granddaughter Virginia Nguyen and her husband, Scott; sister Peggy Bolton Jenkins and her husband, Ellsworth; brother Robert "Bobby" Bolton; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is June 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave., with the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department conducting services and the "Last Call" at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be June 12 at noon at the funeral home. Burial will be at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery. A reception for family, friends and LVFD members will follow at the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, 7411 Cherry Lane.

Lois A. King

Lois Ann King, 64, of Middleburg, Fla., who formerly lived in Laurel, died May 30, 2009 at Kindred Hospital in Florida.

She was the daughter of Estelle B. Derrick Elmore and the late David A. Moorman Sr. A homemaker and of the Catholic faith, she enjoyed karaoke, crafts and her computer.

In addition to her father, a sister, Madge L. Beck, preceded her in death.

Mrs. King is survived by her sons, Robert R. King and his wife, Kristine, of Bryans Road, William L. King, of Hubert, N.C., and Keith D. King and his wife, Angela, of Laurel; daughter Rhonda L. King of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother Estelle B. Elmore, of Middleburg, Fla.; brothers David C. Moorman Sr., Leroy E. Moorman, George E. Elmore, David Moorman, Anthony Moorman, Patrick Flanary, Howard Flanary and Samuel Moorman; sister Estelle B. O'Shields; and former husband Robert W. King, of Newport, N.C.

Visitation was June 4 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Chapel in La Plata. Funeral services were June 5 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf.
