Emerson E. Newton

Emerson E. Newton, 82, a resident of Laurel for 53 years, died June 16, 2009 at his home.

He was born May 10, 1927 in Virginia. He worked for the Department of Agriculture as a boiler room operator/manager for 31 years, retiring in 1976. He also owned his own trucking business, Newton's Trucking. In the early 1980s, he worked at the Laurel race track. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in High Ridge, and the Cherry Hill Baptist Church in Buffalo Junction, Va. His son, Dennis Newton, and siblings George, Jimmy, Willie and Etta Newton, preceded him in death.

Mr. Newton is survived by his children, Linda Thorton, Donald Newton, Jacqueline Newton and husband Colonel, Mozelle Terry and husband Michael, Vincent Newton and wife Shirley, Angela Parker and husband Leon, and Kathy Dunton and husband Carlos; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; sister Sarah Wilkerson; his oldest aunt, Anna Fuller, of Clarksville, Va.; close great-nephew William Moore; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation was June 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at Fleck Funeral Home, 7601 Sandy Spring Road, followed by services. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Buffalo Junction, Va.

Maurice A. Shockley Jr.

Maurice Ames "Mo" Shockley Jr., 45, of Greensboro, died June 17, 2009 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

He was born March 4, 1964 in Takoma Park. He lived in the Annapolis are before moving to Greensboro in 2003. He was an avid sports fan.

Mr. Shockley is survived by his wife, Susan Thoms Shockley, of Greensboro; parents Elizabeth Muldoon Shockley and Maurice Shockley Sr., of Greensboro; sister Gloria Anne Coliton, of Laurel; nephew Jacob King, of Laurel; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service was held June 20 at 2 p.m. at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home in Greensboro. Condolences may be made at fleegleandhelfenbein.com.

Charles H. Smith Sr.

Charles Herman "Smitty" Smith Sr., 82, a resident of Laurel for 62 years, died June 15, 2009 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 3, 1926 in Matthews, Ga., he was the son of the late Thelma (Ganus) and Curby Smith Sr. From 1948 to 1952, he served in the Army. He was a sheet metal worker for the federal government. He was a member of the American Legion Post 60 in Laurel, and the Veterans of Foreign War in Jessup.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katherine V. Smith; daughters Thelma Poole, Linda Harding and Dorothy Karlstrom; son Charles H. Smith Jr.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Jackie Winters; and brothers Cecil Smith and Billy Smith.

Funeral services were June 19 at 10 a.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave. Burial was at Maryland National Memorial Park in Laurel.
