Betty Almanza

Betty Jane Thompson Almanza, of Gretna, Va., and a former resident of Ellicott City, died June 22, 2009. She was 50.

Born Oct. 4, 1958, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Shirley Tumblin Shifflett and Donald V. "Bunk" Thompson.

Mrs. Almanza served in the Navy and was a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 19 years. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Altavista, Va., she served as secretary, taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She was the wife of Ernesto Almanza for more than 32 years.

Mrs. Almanza was preceded in death by her husband, father and stepfather, G. Carl Shifflett.

She is survived by her three children, Angela Almanza Towler, of Hurt, Ryan Adam Almanza, of Gretna, and Felicia Dawn Almanza, of Hurt; her three grandchildren, Erica Marie Towler, Tea' Star Towler and Ayden Dallas Almanza; a sister, Vicki Knicely, of Staunton; and her three brothers, Don Thompson, of Lynchburg, Bruce Thompson and wife, Jaimie, of Timberville, Steve Shifflett and his wife, Mindy, of Madison Heights.

The family would like to give special thanks to Pastor Bobby Brumfield and the members of Calvary Baptist Church for their loving care and support.

A celebration of Mrs. Almanza's life was held June 25, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church, in Altavista, with interment at Green Hill Cemetery.
