James C. Seward Sr.

James Calvin “Sonny” Seward Sr., 72, a resident of Laurel since 1958, died July 4, 2009 at his home.

Born April 28, 1937 in Virginia, he was the son of the late Roy C. and Nancy (Shaffier) Seward. He was a diesel mechanic for Nu-Car Carriers, which is now Leaseway. He was a lifetime member of Teamsters Local 355. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Two sons, James C. Seward Jr. and Timmy Ray Seward, preceded him in death.

Mr. Seward is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara “Bobby” Seward; daughter Theresa “Terri” Nicklow, of Millersville; son Gary Michael Seward, of Florida; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Nancy Viola Simmons, of Staunton, Va.; and brother Leroy Seward, of Taylor, Mich.

Visitation will be July 9 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave., with funeral services at 7 p.m., officiated by hospice chaplain Susie Kelly.

Virginia M. Small


Virginia M. Small, 72, a resident of Laurel for more than 30 years, died June 27, 2009 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.

Born April 18, 1937 in Florida, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Zora (Johnson) Smith. She graduated from high school in St. Petersburg, Fla. She worked for Pressure Science in Beltsville for 15 years and then as a homemaker. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Laurel.

Her husband, Lorenza C. Small, and two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. Small is survived by her children, Lisa Bullock, Connie Moultrie, Anthony Small, Terry Small, Rosalind Jones and David Small; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were July 4 at 1 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Ashton.

Arrangements were made by Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave.

Isabel M. Whitehead


Isabel Mary Whitehead, 85, a Laurel resident for 40 years, died May 27, 2009 at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Fla.

She was born Jan. 28, 1924 in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.  In 1935, she immigrated to the United States with her family and became a U.S. citizen at age 18. She graduated from San Diego State College in San Diego, Calif., and became a school teacher in California and Maryland. She was a member of Eastern Star and Episcopal Church Women and taught reading through the Literacy Council of Manatee County in Florida.

Her husband of 59 years, Ray, a son, Tim, and a granddaughter, Suzi, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Whitehead is survived by her sons, Ed, Allen and Bob Whitehead; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held for Mrs. Whitehead and her husband, Henry Raymond Whitehead, who died in 2005, on Saturday, July 18 at 11 a.m. at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 12502 N. Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612-9499.
