He participated in ROTC and, after completing a master’s degree in statistics at Mankato State College in Mankato, Minn., he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Near the end of his military career, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and steadily battled the disease the rest of his life, always maintaining a positive attitude. Following his retirement from the Air Force in the fall of 1993, he took several positions in the Washington, D.C., area before retiring fully in 2000. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed sports such as soccer, golf, racquetball, sailing and skiing. His family remembers him as a devoted husband and father.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Gayle Olson, preceded him in death.
