Evelyn Amelia Barrow, of Sykesville, died May 23, 2008, of pneumonia, at Copper Ridge, an Alzheimer's disease care facility in Sykesville. She was 88.

Born Dec. 11, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Arthur H. and Amelia Hughes Kirk, she graduated from Pensacola High School in Pensacola, Fla., in 1937.

She enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the early 1940s, and served as first lieutenant as an operating room register nurse with the 347th Army Hospital in Marlborough, England, as well as Germany, France and Italy. She was discharged in 1945.

She married Claude A. Barrow in 1946. He died in 1990.

She was a homemaker and also worked at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

Mrs. Barrow was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Highland, where she participated in the Altar Guild. She also was a member of the Pins and Needles and the Mistletoe Mart.

Family members recall that Mrs. Barrow loved to paint using various mediums including oil and acrylic, and enjoyed the roles of wife and mother.

In the 1990s, as a senior citizen, she graduated from Howard Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in art. She had been named to the dean's list during her time as a student there.

Mrs. Barrow was predeceased by her parents, Arthur H. and Amelia Hughes Kirk; and her husband of 44 years, Claude A. Barrow.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel A. Barrow, of Sykesville, John S. and Patricia P. Barrow, of Sykesville, and James K. and Deborah S. Barrow, of Elkridge; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol A. Barrow and Steven Tidler, of Alexandria, Va., and Patricia A. and Robert Scrivener, of Marriottsville; a sister, Ruth Sawyer, of Venice, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 30, 2008, at Fairhaven Chapel, in Sykesville. The Rev. Wayne Larson officiated.

Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
