Rose S. Lofgren

Rose Smith Lofgren, of Glenwood, died March 16, 2008, at her residence. She was 89.

Born June 8, 1918, in Clarksburg, W.Va., to Ben and Laura Alice Smith, she graduated from high school in Washington, D.C.

She earned an art degree from the Corcoran School of Art.

She married Pete Lofgren in 1943.

In 1984, Mrs. Lofgren worked as a consulting quilt block designer on the Historic Landmark Quilt of Howard County, 1634-1984. The quilt hangs in the George Howard Office Building, in Ellicott City.

Family members recall that her love of gardening led her to become a member of western Howard County's Cattail Garden Club shortly after moving to Howard County in 1970. Mrs. Lofgren participated in several community projects, as well as the "Summers Bounty" sale and other community-based activities and scholarships through the club.

In addition to her husband of 65 years, Mrs. Lofgren is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen and Don Moss, of Pennsylvania and Kristi and Ted Currier, of Woodbine; and three grandchildren, Kathy Moss, Robert Currier and Elizabeth Currier.

A celebration of her life was held June 8, 2008, in Glenwood. The family displayed a selection of her artwork.

Nicholas J. Chaconas Jr.

Nicholas J Chaconas Jr., of Mount Airy, died May 31, 2008, of complications from lung cancer, at his residence. He was 66.

Born May 4, 1942, in Washington, D.C., to Nicholas J. Sr. and Margaret Brown Chaconas, he graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1960.

He married Patricia White in 1963.

Mr. Chaconas owned and operated C&M Foundation Inc., in Mount Airy, for 17 years, which has since closed, and A1 Crack Repair Inc., also in Mount Airy, for seven years. The business is now being run by his son.

Mr. Chaconas was a resident of Mount Airy for 33 years.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Chaconas, of Mount Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven and Cynthia Chaconas, of Wynfield, and Shawn Chaconas, of Los Angeles; a sister and a brother-in-law, Margaret and Eric Adamson, of South Carolina; and five grandchildren, Jonathan Biden, Ashley Chaconas, Nicholas Chaconas, Grant Chaconas and Reid Chaconas.

A Mass of Christian burial was held June 5, 2008, at St. Anthony Shrine, in Emmitsburg. The Rev. John Lombardi officiated.

Interment followed at Mount Carmel cemetery.

Maynard L. Miles

Maynard L. Miles, of Avon Park, Fla., formerly of Scaggsville, died March 22, 2008, at his residence. He was 69.

Born Aug. 16, 1938, in Scaggsville, to Irving and Romaine Miles, he attended Howard High School until 1954.

He married Betty Joan Bland in 1956.

Mr. Miles was a painting contractor who owned and operated his own company, Maynard L. Miles Painting and Contracting, which he took over from his father in 1951. He closed the Fulton-based company in 1978 when he retired and relocated to Florida.

He was predeceased by his parents, Irving and Romaine Miles; a brother, Earl Miles; and a sister, Mickey Harmon.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, Mr. Miles is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Tony Smith, of Clermont, Fla., Julie and Sonny Bayne, of Prince Frederick, and Karen E. Miles, of Avon Park; a son and a daughter-in-law, Mark and Libby Miles, of Plant City, Fla.; a brother, Stanley Miles, of Virginia; a sister, Jessie Burton, of Fulton; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 26, 2008, at Fountain Funeral Home Chapel in Avon Park. The Rev. Vernon Harkey officiated.

Interment followed at Bougainvillea Cemetery in Avon Park.

A remembrance and memorial service is slated for Saturday, June 14, 2008, 3:30 p.m., at Emmanual Methodist Church, 10755 Scaggsville Road, Laurel.

Dorothy M. Ohler-Robinson

Dorothy May Ohler-Robinson, of Elkridge, formerly of Arbutus, died June 5, 2008, of cancer, at her residence. She was 85.

She was born March 31, 1923, in Baltimore. In her youth, she worked on an aunt's farm in Severn where she picked produce and earned $1 a day.

She also worked as an egg candler for a company in Baltimore, and spent 21 years as a telephone sales operator for Montgomery Ward, in Baltimore.

In the early 1970s, she retired from Montgomery Ward to open and operate her own cleaning business, called Ohler Maids, in Arbutus. She later closed the company.

Then in the early 1980s, she began working part-time as a deli worker, floral arranger and greeter for Metro grocery store in Glen Burnie. She retired from there in 1998.

She is survived by five daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy Bedsaul, of Towson, Sandra Sanders, of Fulton, Melva and Charles DiGiacomo, of Maryland, Doris Bryan, of Maryland, and Shirley Stevens, of Elkridge; a son and a daughter-in-law, James and Linda Napier, of Maryland; four grandchildren, Michael Bowling, Steven Spiker, Lynn Wilder and Robert Bedsaul, all of Maryland; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan Keefer, Miranda Wilder and Nathaniel Bedsaul, all of Maryland.

A memorial service was held June 10, 2008, at the Melville Chapel United Methodist Church in Elkridge. A luncheon followed in the church hall.
