Paul Jeffrey Andersen, of Ellicott City, died June 6, 2008, at his residence. He was 60.
Born Dec. 29, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pa., to William E. and Margaret M. Herberger Andersen, he graduated from Molloy High School in Jamaica, N.Y., in 1965.
In 1968, Mr. Andersen was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was based in Vauntau, Vietnam, where he worked as a medical technician in a mobile mass unit. He was discharged in 1970 and he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Andersen held a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in science.
Mr. Andersen owned and operated his own company called Andersen Medical, in Ellicott City for 10 years.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Mr. Andersen is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Karen and retired Col. Henry Fiumara, of Cary, N.C. and Diane M. Andersen, of New Market; a brother and a sister-in-law, William E. Andersen, Esq. and Jane Lifset, Esq., of Princeton Junction, N.J.; three nieces, Jennifer and her husband, Adam McDonald, of Arlington, Va., Christina and her husband, Jay Newport, of Cary, N.C., and Antigone J. Andersen, of Laurel; two nephews, Eric and his wife, Jennifer Andersen, of Natick, Mass., and Peter Andersen, of Princeton Junction; a great-niece, Anna Grace McDonald, of Arlington; and a great-nephew, Spencer Andersen, of Natick.
A Mass of Christian burial was held June 9, 2008, at the Parish Center of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, in Libertytown. The Rev. John Dietzenbach presided.
Interment followed at St. Peter's cemetery.

Joseph L. Parks Sr.
Joseph Lawson Parks Sr., of Ellicott City, died June 9, 2008, of a heart attack, at Howard County General Hospital. He was 94.
He was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Tangier Island, Va., to John Lawson and Marlan Baker Parks.
In the mid-1930s, Mr. Parks enlisted in the Maryland National Guard and was part of the medical corps. He was discharged in 1939.
He married Frances Alma Blades in 1939.
Mr. Parks worked as a salesman for Publicity Engravers, in Baltimore, for 62 years. He retired more than 20 years ago.
He was a lifetime member of the Kent Island Yacht Club and the Masonic Home, Lafayette Lodge, in Baltimore.
Mr. Parks was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Frances Alma Blades Parks, who died in 1995.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph L. Jr., and Nancy Parks of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and John A. and Mary Parks, of Bel Air; a sister, Rose Hayden, of Joppatown; and three grandchildren, Laura L. Pecunes, Jason Parks and Timothy Parks, all of Bel Air.
Funeral services were held June 13, 2008, at Eline Funeral Home in Reisterstown. The Rev. Timothy P. Feaser presided.
Interment followed at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.
Howard T. Scheufele
Howard Tillman Scheufele, of Ellicott City, formerly of Catonsville, Reisterstown and Columbia, died June 11, 2008, at Ellicott City Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ellicott City. He was 76.
Born Sept. 1, 1931, in Catonsville, to Raymond and Margaret Scheufele, he attended Catonsville High School until the late 1940s.
In the 1950s, he enlisted in the Catonsville National Guard and served as a sergeant during his 16 years of service.
Mr. Scheufele was a mill worker with Monumental Mill Work in Baltimore and Westminster for at least 30 years prior to retiring in the early 1990s.
During his career, he served as a firefighter and a paramedic with the Catonsville Fire Department for 10 years.
While a resident of Columbia, Mr. Scheufele lived at Gwen's Place Assisted Living.
Mr. Scheufele was predeceased by a sister, Mary Poist; and five brothers, Joseph Scheufele, George Scheufele, Richard Scheufele, Raymond Scheufele and Albert Scheufele.
He is survived by four brothers, Charles Schefele, of Ellicott City, William Schefele, of Baltimore, Raymond Schefele, of Baltimore and Dennis Schefele, of Sykesville; and two sisters, Pearl Cutcher, of Woodlawn, and Darlene Papale, of Catonsville.
Funeral services were held June 17, 2008, at Harry H. Witzke Funeral Home in Ellicott City.
Interment followed at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.

Mary A. Sherman
Mary Alice Sherman, of Jessup, died June 10, 2008, at Laurel Regional Hospital. She was 75.
She was born July 19, 1932, in Oakland, to John Vernon and Mary Alverta Merryman Poe.
She married Gilbert "John" Isaiah Sherman in the late 1940s.
Mrs. Sherman worked as a technician for Baxter Co., in Savage for more then 20 years. She retired in the mid-1980s.
She was a resident of Jessup for more than 50 years.
She was a member of the Laurel Senior Center and the Savage Senior Center, where she called Bingo and sent out sympathy and birthday cards.
Mrs. Sherman was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Gilbert "John" Isaiah Sherman, who died in 1998; her parents, John Vernon Poe and Mary Alverta Merryman Poe; and two brothers, Jackie Poe and Vernon Merryman.
Family members recall that Mrs. Sherman, whose favorite saying was "I know," was a giving person, made sure that all her nieces and nephews received Christmas gifts each year.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Gilbert Michael Sherman and Sharon D. Maenner, of Jessup; a sister, Ann LaRue, of Oella; three brothers, James Edward Poe, of Sykesville, Ronald Lee Poe, of Catonsville and Gary Dean Poe, of Parkville; and a grandson, Gregory Michael Sherman, of Ellicott City.
Funeral services were held June 14, 2008, at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel. The Rev. Lyman Burnsed presided.
Interment followed at Savage Cemetery.

Dorothy M. Chambers
Dorothy Marie Chambers, of Baltimore, formerly of Ellicott City, died June 3, 2008, of cancer, at a family residence. She was 71.
She was born June 22, 1936, in Baltimore, to Wilbur Nelson and Esther Leona Green Wiles.
She was married to Joseph Chambers.
Mrs. Chambers worked as a line worker at Maryland Cup Corp. in Baltimore for at least 35 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Wilbur Nelson and Esther Leona Green Wiles; four sisters, Beatrice Miller, Janet Johns, Sylvia Johns and Mary Helen Butler; and five brothers, Herbert Wiles, Merle Wiles, Edward Wiles, Allen Wiles and Kenneth Wiles.
Mrs. Chambers is survived by a son, Ronald N. Chambers, of Howard County; two sisters, Elva McCauley, and Patricia Miser, both of Ellicott City; three brothers, Roy Wiles, of Eastern Shore, Russell Wiles, of Vanworth, Ohio, and Leonard Wiles, of Florida; six step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 6, 2008, at Slack Funeral Home in Ellicott City. The Rev. Michael Barnes officiated.
Interment followed at Lakeview Memorial Park in Sykesville.

Alice M. Shifflett
Alice May Shifflett, of Ellicott City, died June 12, 2008, of complications from lung cancer, at her residence. She was 81.
She was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Woodstock, to Charles Augusta and Mary Louise Redmond Biddinger.
She married James Mervin Shifflett Sr. in the early 1950s.
Mrs. Shifflett was a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her parents, Charles Augusta and Mary Louise Redmond Biddinger; and her husband of 57 years, James Mervin Shifflett Sr., who died in 2004.
Mrs. Shifflett is survived by two sons, James M. Shifflett Jr., of Severn and Leon F. Shifflett, of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Margaret Biddinger Williams and Pearl Evelyn Leader, both of Maryland; a brother, Joseph Lee Biddinger, of Maryland; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held June 16, 2008, at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Ellicott City. The Rev. John D. Slack officiated.
