Gloria Jean Snyder Jones, of Sykesville, formerly of Catonsville, died June 9, 2008, in Sykesville. She was 81.
Born Nov. 28, 1926, in Corey, Pa., to Charles Edward and Gretta Viola Mingle Snyder, she lived in State College, Pa., during her youth and graduated from State High School in State College, in 1944.
In 1947, she graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. She also earned a Master of Science degree in education in 1952, also from Penn State.
She married Charles "Chuck" L. Jones in 1954. Mr. Jones was the principal of Wilde Lake and Waterloo middle schools.
Mrs. Jones worked as a physical education teacher for Scotts Branch Elementary School in Baltimore County for more than 20 years.
She was a member for 34 years of the Episcopal Church of Christ the King in Woodlawn, also attending the Fairhaven Chapel after becoming a resident of the continuing care retirement community in 2003.
Family members recall that she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who will be remembered for her love of family, friends, teaching and her students. She also enjoyed attending church, gardening, reading, golfing and was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles, the Baltimore Ravens and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Mrs. Jones was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Charles "Chuck" L. Jones, who died in 1995.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Charles "Chip" William and Soo Mi Lee Jones, of Seoul, Korea; a daughter and a son-in-law, Kristen Lee and David Charles Wineke, of Severn; five grandchildren, Joshua and his wife, Liz O'Melia, of New Jersey, Nicholas O'Melia, of Westminster, Jayme O'Melia, of Towson, Christopher Jones, of Atlanta, Ga. and Lauren Jones, of North Carolina; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth O'Melia, of New Jersey.
A memorial service was held June 14, 2008, at Fairhaven Chapel in Sykesville. The family received greetings from friends following the service.
Interment will be held at Christ Church in St. Michaels at a later date.
