Alma J. Sandy
Alma Jean Sandy, of Scaggsville, formerly of Elkridge and Laurel, died June 10, 2008, of pulmonary fibrosis, at Joseph Richey Hospice House in Baltimore. She was 76.
Born April 20, 1932, in St. Charles, Va., to Vernon C. Sr., and Georgia May Dotson, her family relocated to Elkridge when she was 10. She graduated from Elkridge High School in 1951, where she was a member of the girls basketball team.
She was married to Alston C. Sandy.
Mrs. Sandy worked for more than a total of 37 years as a credit manager, office manager and as part of the sales staff for Crane Plumbing Supply in Beltsville, as well as Westburne Supply, which later purchased Crane, in Temple Hills. She retired 13 years ago.
She volunteered for more than five years at the Elkridge Senior Center, where she helped to serve dinners and call out Bingo numbers.
Mrs. Sandy was also a member of the Road Runners Club of Elkridge, for which she served as president for five years.
Family members recall that she loved to travel. One of her fondest memories was riding in a hot air balloon with her granddaughter, Lauren Anne Dixon, in 2002, they said.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alston C. Sandy, who died in 1987; a brother, Vernon C. Dotson II; and two sisters, Betty Flora and Joan Stevens.
Mrs. Sandy is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Ronda Jean and Roy T. Dixon, of Severn; three brothers, George Dotson, of Baltimore, Charles Dotson, of Towson and Raymond Dotson, of Laurel; a granddaughter, Lauren Anne Dixon, of Laurel; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held June 13, 2008, at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel. The Rev. Susie Kelly officiated.
Interment followed at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.
