Hazel Virginia Barth, of Ellicott City, died June 9, 2008, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. She was 81.
Born Sept. 5, 1926, in Oella, to William Joseph and Virgie L. Derflinger Kelley, she attended Catonsville Senior High School until the early 1940s.
She married Howard Robert "Bobby" Barth in 1942.
Mrs. Barth worked as a cafeteria manager for the Howard County School System for at least 20 years. She retired in the mid-1980s.
She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City for 72 years. During that time, she volunteered at a women's prison in Jessup, where she played Bingo with the inmates and held prayer services and conducted devotionals. She also helped with many other church projects.
In addition, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society during its Daffodil Days. Mrs. Barth also walked in the Howard County Relay for Life cancer fundraiser for five years.
Mrs. Barth was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Howard Robert "Bobby" Barth, who died in 1990; and two brothers, Joseph Kelley and Raymond "Bubby" Kelley.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Badger, of Camden, Del., and Beverly Barth, of Dares Beach, Md.; two sons, Thomas Barth and Franklin Barth, both of Ellicott City; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 12, 2008, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City. The Rev. David Simpson officiated.
Interment followed at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville.

Frances M. Johnson
Frances Mae Garth Johnson, of Ellicott City, formerly of Sykesville, died June 12, 2008, of cancer, at her residence. She was 91.
Born Jan. 12, 1917, in Hazelhurst, Miss., to Lwellyn Branham and Ada Bird Garth, she graduated from a high school in Hazelhurst in 1934.
Following graduation, she left Mississippi and relocated to Alabama to pursue an education and career in bookkeeping.
She married Robert E. Johnson in 1939.
Mrs. Johnson worked as a supervisor for civil service offices at several U.S. Air Force installations including Japan and the United States, as well the Pentagon. She retired in 1978 after more than 30 years of service.
She held leadership positions in a local Maryland chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Mount Presbyterian Church in Ellicott City.
She and her husband traveled frequently and lived in several states as well as overseas due to his military assignments.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert E. Johnson, who died in 2000; and a daughter, Janice Prince.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary E. Johnson, of San Antonio, Texas, Frank W. Johnson, of Merritt Island, Fla., and Robert Hunter and Martha Johnson, of Ellicott City; a sister, Maurie Rials, of Natchez, Miss.; five grandchildren, Corey Johnson, of Titusville, Ethan Johnson, of Titusville, Cara Johnson, of Ellicott City, Angela Johnson, of Ellicott City, and James Johnson, of Ellicott City; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held June 17, 2008, at Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church in Ellicott City. The Rev. Sidney Venable and the Rev. Kip Smith officiated.
Interment is slated for July 31, 2008, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., where her husband was interred with honors.
Margaret L. Cargo
Margaret Ludwig Cargo, of Columbia, died June 13, 2008, at her residence at Vantage House. She was 92.
Born April 23, 1916, in Saginaw, Mich., to Harland and Grace Willemin Ludwig, she graduated from Albion (Mich.) High School, in 1934.
In 1938, she graduated from Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at college, she was a member of the Albion Women's Debate Team.
She married William I. Cargo, who was the Ambassador to Nepal, in 1938.
Mrs. Cargo was a homemaker who, due to her responsibilities as a diplomat's wife, became an unofficial representative of the United States and the couple traveled the world together.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years who died in 2005; and two brothers, James Ludwig and John Ludwig.
Mrs. Cargo is survived by a son, David Cargo, of Columbia; a daughter, Ruth Cargo, of Decatur, Ga., and Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Fisher, of Arizona; three half-sisters, Virginia Murdoch, Barbara Wilson and Janice Promberger, all of Arizona; and three grandchildren, Martha Cargo, of Columbia, James Boswell, of Owings Mills, and Ben Boswell, of Ellicott City.
Graveside services were held June 19, 2008, in Bellevue, Mich. Her nephew, the Rev. William Cargo, officiated.
A reception for family and friends is slated for Sunday, June 29, 2008, at 2 p.m., in the Winter Garden at Vantage House, 5400 Vantage Point Road, Columbia.

Charlotte E. R. Shaw
Charlotte Easley Reeder Shaw, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Clarksville, died June 16, 2008, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. She was 84.
Born Nov. 21, 1923, in Louisville, Ky., to John Allen and Eleanor Robertson Easley. When she was 5, she and her family moved to Wake Forest, N.C., in order for her father to take a position as minister of Wake Forest Baptist Church.
She graduated from Wake Forest High School in 1940.
In 1944, she graduated from Wake Forest College with a Bachelor of Arts in English.
She trained for a year in Philadelphia, Pa., in order to become an occupational therapist. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Crippled Children's Clinic for two years.
She married David A. Reeder in 1948. He died in 1984.
In 1956, the then-Mrs. Reeder and her husband settled in Clarksville, where family members said, she helped to start public kindergarten in Howard County in the early 1960s.
For 10 years, starting in 1965, she worked as a volunteer coordinator for Head Start, a day care for disadvantaged children in Howard County.
She also served on the Howard County School Board as a member for nine years, starting in 1971.
In 1986, she married Bynum G. Shaw and relocated to Winston-Salem, N.C.
When her second husband died in 2001, she moved again, this time to Raleigh.
Mrs. Shaw is remembered for her love of children and for her service as a volunteer at Millbrook Elementary in Raleigh, for two years, and Douglass Elementary in Raleigh for one year. At both schools, she tutored kindergarten through second grade in various subjects.
In addition, she was a member for 30 years of Linden-Linthicum Methodist Church in Clarksville, where she served on several committees. She also made quilts, as well as hats for premature infants. For the last six years, she was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh.
She loved music and gardening, family members said.
Mrs. Shaw was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, David A. Reeder; her husband of 15 years, Bynum G. Shaw, who died in 2001; a brother, John Allen Easley; and a sister, Nancy Uhl.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Nell and Joe Foltz, of Raleigh, and Betsy Reeder, of Jumping Branch, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Bonnie and her husband, Rob Fowler, of Winston-Salem, and Susan, and her husband Sam Huffstetler, of Yorktown, Va.; a son and a daughter-in-law, John and Janet Reeder, of Ellicott City; a sister, Eleanor Barnes, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Jill Reeder, of Austin, Texas, Emily Reeder, of Austin, Timothy Reeder, of Ellicott City, Jessie Reeder, of Madision, Wis., David Foltz, of Raleigh and Michael Foltz, of Raleigh; and four step-grandchildren, Lewis and his wife, Biby Fowler, of Chapel Hill N.C., David Fowler, of Winston-Salem, Alison Huffstetler, of Yorktown, Pa., and Raleigh Huffstetler, of Yorktown.
A memorial service was held June 18, 2008, at Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh.

Webster G. MacCartee Sr.
Webster G. MacCartee Sr., of Silverhill, Ala., formerly of Ellicott City, died June 9, 2008, at his residence. He was 87.
Born Nov. 10, 1920, in Washington, D.C., to Charles J. Sr. and Alice W. MacCartee, he graduated from Clarksville High School in 1939.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952, and was based at Fort Campbell, Ky., while serving in the Korean War as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, dubbed the "Screaming Eagles." He was discharged after three years of service.
He married Min Pettit in 1952.
Mr. MacCartee worked as a dairy farmer in both Howard and Frederick counties during the early 1940s. During that time, he rented a farm in Ellicott City, where he raised a herd of cows. While a resident of Alabama, he owned and operated the Minamac Wild Flower Bog.
Family members recall that he was a member and former president of the Ayrshire Breeders Association. Mr. MacCartee was also a cattle judge for different fairs in Howard County, and an avid square dancer. He was a member of square dancing groups in Howard County and Alabama.
He was predeceased by a brother, Charles J. MacCartee Jr.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mr. MacCartee is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Joy and Fletcher Eyster, of Napa Valley, Calif., and Alice and James Brown, of Pensacola, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Webster G. MacCartee Jr., of Daphne, Ala., and Matthew H. and Rebecca MacCartee, of Haddock, Ga.; a sister, Ida M. Anthony, of Ellicott City; two close family friends, Henry R. Wehland, of Catonsville, and Shirley W. Carter, of Ellicott City; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Christine E. Cook
Christine E. Cook, of Halethorpe, died June 20, 2008, of a stroke, at St. Agnes Hospital. She was 75.
Born Nov. 24, 1932, in Clarksville, to William and Christine Lowe, she graduated from high school in Ellicott City.
She married Clarence W. Cook in 1943.
Mrs. Cook was a homemaker who worked at C& T Telephone as an telephone operator.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Ellicott City.
Mrs. Cook was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Clarence W. Cook, who died in 1987.
Family members recall that she was a strong, compassionate and caring mother and friend.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan A. Cook, of Pasadena and Tracie L. Emge, of Lansdown; two sons, Charles W. Cook, of Catonsville and Steven M. Cook, of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 23, 2008, at Emory United Methodist Church in Ellicott City. The Rev. L. Katherine Moore officiated.
Dorothy J. Sander
Dorothy Jane Sander, of Hanover, died June 18, 2008, of natural causes, at her residence. She was 86.
Born Aug. 29, 1921, in Baltimore, to John Aloysius and Emma Marie Kronenberg Dorsey, she graduated from high school in 1937.
She married John Sander in 1942.
Mrs. Sander worked as an accountant for the Rouse Co. for 17 years.
Family members recall that Mrs. Sander was a caring and kind person.
She was predeceased by her husband of 19 years, John Sander, who died in 1961; two sisters, Eleanor Kelbaugh and Thelma Ryall; and a brother, John A. Dorsey.
Mrs. Sander is survived by a daughter, Sister Mary Joseph (Dorothy Jane Sander), of Virginia; six sisters, Ruth Rettaliata, of Howard County, Mildred Todd, of Columbia, Marie Wiedefeld, of Friendship, Margaret Rettaliata, of Howard County, Jean D. Grant, of Hanover and Patricia Taylor, of Virginia; and a brother, Robert Dorsey, of Ellicott City, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial was held June 21, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Jessup. The Rev. Juan Vazquez officiated.
Interment followed at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.

Marcia A. Majka
Marcia Ann Majka, of Ellicott City, died June 14, 2008, at her residence. She was 52.
Born March 20, 1956, in San Francisco, to Billy Lee and Evelyn Lee Payne Brinkley, she graduated from Crestmor High School in San Bruno, Calif., in 1974.
In the late 1970s, she graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.
She married Kenneth J. Majka in 1983.
Mrs. Majka was a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her father, Billy Lee Brinkley.
In addition to her husband of 25 years, Mrs. Majka is survived by a son, Maxfield Majka, of Ellicott City; a brother, Mark Brinkley, of Lincoln, Calif.; and her mother, Evelyn Brinkley, of Lincoln.
A memorial service is slated for Saturday, June 28, 2008, 7:30 p.m., at 2803 Green Shade Court, Ellicott City.
Walter S. Bailey
Walter S. Bailey, of Ellicott City, died June 20, 2008, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was 89.
Born Dec. 15, 1918, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Walter Fowler and Hazel Shattuck Bailey, he graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York in 1938.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a corporal and was based at several locations in the United States as well as in Thurleigh, England with the 306th Bomber Group. During World War II, he was a combat crew tail gunner on a Boeing B17. He was discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant. For his service, he was the recipient of an Air Medal.
He married Marguerite Gwendolyn Wiley in 1945.
Mr. Bailey worked as a draftsman for Joseph Bancroft and Co. in Wilmington, Del., for 17 years, beginning in 1953.
He also was employed as a drafting teacher, beginning in 1970, for the state of Delaware at the Delaware Technical and Community College until he retired in 1981.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by two daughters, Pamela Kreis, of Ellicott City and Jean Truitt and her significant other, Michael Daye, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Darya and her husband, David Cowan, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Greg Kreis, of Baltimore, Jennifer and her husband, Joe Mignano, of Boynton Beach, and Jeremy and his wife, Amy Truitt, of Kennesaw, Ga.; and five great-grandchildren, Sam Cowan, of Brooklyn, Claire Cowan, of Brooklyn, Christian Mignano, of Boyton Beach, Sara Mignano, of Boyton Beach, and Megan Truitt, of Kennesaw.
A Celebration of Life is slated for June 28, 2008, at a relative's residence.

Ricardo S. Langford Jr.
Ricardo "Rick" S. Langford Jr., of Columbia, died June 16, 2008 of cardiac arrest, Howard County General Hospital. He was 69.
Born Dec. 13, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Samuel R. and Alma L. Langford, he graduated from Glenville High School in 1957.
In his yearbook, he was listed as the "Most Friendly." Family members said that he was responsible for starting lunch time "Teen Time Activities" while a student there.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and was based at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, as well as in Sculthorpe, England, where he refueled aircraft. He was discharged in 1961.
He married Margaret Smith in 1963.
In 1962, he worked as a salesman for the Bond Bread Co. in Cleveland for five years. Family members said that he was one of the first black men to hold this position with the company. Six years later, Mr. Langford worked as a national sales representative for Ernest and Julio Gallo Wines, in Columbus, Ohio for five years. Family said that he was also one of the first black men to obtain this position, for which he traveled across the country, developing markets, promoting sales and writing public relations correspondence.
Mr. Langford and his family relocated from Columbus to Columbia in 1973, due to his position as a general sales manager for Foreman Brothers Distributors in Washington, D.C., where he was employed for five years.
In 1978, he began working as a regional sales representative with Schieffeilin and Somerset Company Importers, in New York, where he was employed for at least 10 years.
After developing a friendship with Jesse Wong in 1990, he began working as a consultant and partner for Wong in some of his restaurants throughout Howard County, including Hunan Manor, Asean Bistro and Jesse Wong's Hong Kong restaurant, where Mr. Langford coordinated the annual charity fundraiser, the Disability Awareness Program for the Howard County Public School System.
Mr. Langford served as an officer on the board of the Restaurant Association of Maryland for Howard County for at least three years.
Remembered as a loving, affectionate father and husband, he was always available for family and friends. Mr. Langford was an avid golfer, who enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching news broadcasts, talking about politics, and watching all types of sporting events, especially golf. Family also recalls that people loved his barbecue ribs, and that he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
In addition, family members recall that Mr. Langford genuinely cared for people, and was a happy and positive person, whose infectious personality could draw others into his circle. Dubbed the "Mayor of Columbia" by a friend, he traveled frequently to such locales as China, Mexico and South Africa, and is remembered for his ability to make friends wherever he went. Some of those that knew him considered him as a second father.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Mr. Langford is survived by two daughters, Tina Sanders, of Ellicott City, and Toni and Wesley Samuel, of Upper Marboro; a sister, Rosina Jackson, of Springfield, Va.; a brother and a sister-in-law, Raphael and Julie Langford, of Baltimore; his mother-in-law, Ollie Morales, of Columbia; two nieces, Traci and her husband, Chip Hopkins, of Springfield and Dawn Langford, of Washington D.C.; a nephew, Russell Jackson, of San Francisco; three aunts; five grandchildren; and many cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held June 24, 2008, at Celebration Church in Columbia.
Interment followed at Columbia Memorial Park in Clarksville.
