Born May 28, 1942, in Pittsburgh, to Mary and William Plunkett, she graduated from Belleview High School, in Pittsburgh, in 1960.
In the 1970s, she graduated from Antioch College, in Maryland, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, with a specialty in art therapy.
Ms. Saar was a sculptor who co-operated the Foundry Street Studio at Savage Mill, a now defunct artist co-op in Maryland, from 1985 to 1995.
She is survived by four daughters, Christy Baker, of Baltimore, Betsy Spalding, of Arlington, Va., Katy Shields, of Mount Airy, and Meg Moon, of Columbia; and four grandsons, Alex Moon, of Columbia, Matt Baker, of Baltimore, Austin Shields, of Mount Airy, and Brendan Shields, of Mount Airy.
