Jump rope

The Kangaroo Kids Precision Jump Rope team will hold open house registration for beginning jump rope classes:

Sept. 8, 4:30-6 p.m. at Wilde Lake Middle School. Registration will take place in the gym. Classes (basic jump, fun and fitness or double Dutch) begin the week of Sept. 22 at Wilde Lake Middle.

Sept. 9, 6-8 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Center. The classes (beginning jump rope and adult jump rope) are offered through the rec department and begin Sept. 23. Online registration is available at www.howardcountymd.gov/rap.

Kangaroo Kids will be performing at the Glenwood Community Center from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Kangaroo Kids will not have tryouts this year.

Celebration of Sports

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks' sixth annual Celebration of Sports banquet will be held Oct. 20 at Turf Valley Resort. Tony Brudis, Jim Carlan, Don Disney, Karen Dye, Roger Hockey, Helen Moody and Stanley Nedzel will be inducted into the Community Sports Hall of Fame at the event. Baseball

The regular meeting of "Talkin' Baseball" will be held Sat., Sept. 6 at 9 a.m. at the East Columbia Library. Fran Zimniuch will discuss his book, "Going, Going, Gone: The Art of the Trade in Major League Baseball."

The Sykesville Cyclones 11-U team is looking for players for the spring season. To be eligible, players may not turn 12 prior to May 1, 2009. The Cyclones have a completely open roster and all positions are available. Open workouts will be held Sept. 7 and 14 2-4 p.m., at Freedom Park, field 4. Tryouts will be held Sept. 21, 28 and Oct. 5. The MVSA Storm 12-U travel team is holding tryouts at 11 a.m., Sept. 6 and 13 at Patsy Huson field in Montgomery County. Girls 12 and under as of Jan. 1, 2009 are eligible. Howard County Youth Program's year-round Liberty softball teams will hold tryouts in September. These teams compete mostly in USSSA "C" level tournaments (and up to two B or Open level tournaments per year). The level of commitment and level of competition is not as high as with the HCYP Patriots program.

Tryouts will be at Kiwanis-Wallas Park in Ellicott City, field 7, as follows:

U-10: Sept. 13 (1-3 p.m.) and Sept. 21 (noon-2 p.m.). All U-10 players planning on trying out must e-mail ravens515@gmail.com.

Basketball

Registration is underway for the Elkridge Youth Organization basketball's recreational programs for boys and girls ages 5-17. These programs emphasize instruction and fun. Field hockey

The Baltimore Blitz field hockey club is looking for girls in the U-14, U-16 and U-19 age levels for travel teams for the indoor winter season. Tryouts will be held at the conclusion of the fall high school and recreation council seasons.

The Blitz would also like to hear from boys who are interested in learning how to play field hockey.
