To be the best, you need to play the best. Sometimes, though, the results are a bit painful.

Mt. Hebron’s girls field hockey team opened its season Friday at home with a 7-1 loss to Fallston. The score was, 2-1, in Fallston’s favor at the half. The Cougars put tremendous pressure on Mt. Hebron the whole game.

Fallston “wore us out mentally,” said Mt. Hebron coach Jeannette Ireland, now in her 19th year with the program.

“Even those years when we had tremendous teams … to be that on at the beginning of the season. Wow!” Ireland said of Fallston.

Fallston outshot Mt. Hebron, 30-8. The Vikings’ lone goal came from Hilary Fields on a first-half corner play.

Fallston won its 10th state field hockey title last fall, beating Centennial in the state semifinals and then Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 1-0, in overtime in the final.
