Girls soccer
Hammond pulled a stunning upset by beating Wilde Lake, 3-2. Amy Simpson, assisted by Angela Humpert, scored with less than two minutes to play for the game-winner. Kim Humpert and Cathlene Webster also scored.
Webster, who is the daughter of Wilde Lake coach Phil Webster, said it was "our senior game and we all knew what we wanted to do."
Sam Gailey controlled the midfield, said Cathlene Webster, to give Hammond scoring opportunities.
Hammond beat Howard, 3-2, in double overtime, lost to St. Mary's Ryken, 4-1, and lost to Centennial, 3-1, before beating Long Reach, 3-0.
Hammond then lost to Glenelg, 4-3; the winning goal came with five minutes left in the game. This win over Wilde Lake gives Hammond some momentum for the playoffs. "I'm excited about the playoffs," Webster said.
Humpert said that the Golden Bears have "figured out we can't put our heads down" when the other team scores.
Hammond is 4-7 overall but has been finding the net lately, coach Pete Di Marco said. "We've had three three-goal games. We're finally scoring. We're still in games until the end."
Humpert now has nine goals. She scored twice in the win over Long Reach, and her sister, Angela, scored the third goal.
Cathlene Webster said she would not gloat over beating her father's team. Wilde Lake beat Hammond last year, and "he was gracious," she said, "so I will be, too."
Beth Glaros, with assists from Bethany Keefer, scored both goals for Wilde Lake.
Earlier, Wilde Lake beat Oakland Mills, 5-0.
Glenelg and Centennial played through two overtimes and ended with a 0-0 tie. Howard beat Centennial, 2-1, in overtime.

Shelby Schoen and Katherine Kanner scored for Marriotts Ridge.
Simkin also had both goals in a 2-0 win over Oakland Mills.
Centennial's win came after a loss to Howard. Mathews said the team has not been warming up well before games, and it cost them in the Howard game. "We weren't ready (to play). But we came out of that game knowing that would never happen again," she said.

The Dragons are in a rebuilding mode this year, particularly on defense.
"We've been very defensively minded all season," coach Jess McAdams said. But her players pressed the attack against Friends, recording 14 corners to the visitors' three.
After playing Bryn Mawr later this week, Glenelg Country faces McDonogh in the first-round of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Volleyball
Centennial (13-0) is heating up for the postseason with wins over River Hill (11-2) and Catonsville (11-2) last week.
River Hill did take a game from the Eagles for the first time in match play this season, in game three. Centennial was down, 22-16, in that game, but came back to tie it at 25 before the Hawks closed it out on a Laura Whitney ace.
"The girls were disappointed," coach Larry Schofield said. "You've got to keep mentally strong the whole time through if a team's gonna keep coming at you like River Hill did."
In that game River Hill got a balanced attack from Becky Paynter (3), Sarah Okey (3), Carolyn Kleinberger (2), Nikki Piper (2), Sarah Gordon (2) and Marta Roman who combined for 13 kills.
"Becky had an absolutely outstanding night," coach Sybil Modispacher said.
In game four, Centennial stormed back to hold River Hill to eight.
"They regrouped in game four, if you keep a decent team to single digits, you're hitting on all cylinders," Schofield said.
In that game, Sam Brostrom had three kills, Molly Speicher had three aces, Kristin Anderson had two kills, and Ashley Fan had a kill and the match winning point block.
