Drew Weymer (seven goals) and Sam Weinstein (draw control) combined to help Glenelg Country School defeat Chapelgate, 18-11, in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference game.

"They beat us in the last six seconds last year. We didn't want that to happen again," Glenelg Country School coach Paige Walton said. Last year was Chapelgate's first-ever victory over Glenelg Country.

"Draw control was huge in the game," Walton said. She estimated that Weinstein controlled the draw 90 percent of the time. The center also had two goals.

Jenna Beal (four goals), Kristen Ramsland (three), Allie Kohr and Addie Beachley (two each) scored for Chapelgate.

"They definitely had some shooters," Walton said.

Glenelg Country keeper Lindsay Arnold had 12 saves, including some "huge saves" near the end of the game, Walton said.

River Hill coach Keith Gonsouland knew his team's opening stretch this spring was going to be difficult. Still, with the Hawks starting 0-4 overall, things have been rougher than expected.

The River Hill season started with a 11-6 loss to Marriotts Ridge, followed by a narrow 8-6 defeat at the hands of Atholton. Things didn't get much better in losses to Glenelg, 12-2, and non-county foe Fallston, 12-4. The three county losses already tie the most by the Hawks' program in an entire season over the last six years.

River Hill did get itself on the winning track March 31 against Oakland Mills, earning its first victory of the season.

Marriotts Ridge, meanwhile, managed its way through a tough opening stretch of its own to start the spring a perfect 3-0. The Mustangs have beaten River Hill, Glenelg and Atholton already, with the wins over the last two on that list coming by one goal apiece.

In the game against Atholton, a 6-5 victory in overtime, Kyle Williams netted the game-winner 90 seconds into the extra period. Williams, who finished with two goals and an assist in the game, is the team's leading scorer on the season thus far. Mustangs' goalie Dan Schonfeld has also been stellar in the team's three games, making 10 or more saves each time out.

Baseball

After losing their first three games of the season, Centennial is back on track with two consecutive wins. Against Long Reach on Friday, Joe Couch was the stopper, throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout. Shawn Hendon was also impressive for the Lightning, going the distance in a six-hit, 4-0, loss.

Alec Baum looked sharp for the Eagles on Monday night, pitching five innings in a 13-2 win over Wilde Lake. He also doubled twice to help himself, and got help from home runs by teammates Jake Beck and Dan Powers.

Hammond (4-0), the county's last undefeated team, continues to roll along, after Danny Wissmann's 5-0 complete game shutout of Wilde Lake March 27. It's Wissmann's second complete game shutout of the season. In that game, he allowed only two hits. Travis Clark (two) and Kevin McVicker supported him with home runs. Eric Oler did double for Wilde Lake in support of Mike Bucci's complete game, seven-hit effort.

Marriotts Ridge, the defending county champ and state finalist, struggled early on with their pitching, allowing 24 runs in the first two games. But the Mustangs appear to be finding their stride. Kevin Kratochwill allowed only four hits and one run in a complete game win over River Hill Friday. The Mustangs, in second place at 4-1, have now allowed only six runs in their last three games.

Even better for the defending champs, ace Tim Blair (ten wins in 2008), returned to the mound after a shoulder injury kept him off of it to start the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning in relief Monday night against Howard. Mitchell Smith homered in the win.

On Friday Mt. Hebron beat Howard, 8-3. Viking Andrew Monger doubled twice and drove in four runs as Pat McNamara earned the win on the mound. Ryan Smouse pitched the final three innings, closing out the game with four strikeouts and facing only 10 batters.

Howard was led by Ryan Toland (two doubles) and catcher Rod Wotring (two singles).

Reservoir jumped all over Mt. Hebron's six fielding errors Monday night in a 14-2 win. Andy Bushong doubled twice for the Gators.

Glenelg Country's Sean Eitze led the Dragons to a 3-2 win over CHEN, striking out seven in seven innings and allowing one earned run.
