Turf Valley women
The Turf Valley Women's 18-Hole Group's spring match was hard fought in all three flights with tough competition and much dodging of rain drops. The winners were: Flight 1: Ginny Lamb, a newcomer; Flight 2: Janice Jennings; Flight 3: Mary Butera.
Soccer
Thunder Soccer Club
A week after falling to the Philadelphia Liberty, 2-1, for its first loss of the WPSL East season, the Thunder Soccer Club Maryland Pride defeated, the New York Athletic Club, 2-0.
Against New York, Anabel Jimenez continued her assault on opposing goalkeepers on Saturday, netting her third goal in as many games. Lisa Zanti also scored for the Pride on a free kick. Goalkeeper Bevin English, making her debut for TSC, included one point-blank stop among the four saves she had in the game.

The Thunder Soccer Club Fury (U-14 boys) won the Blue Gray Cup championship in Gettysburg Memorial Day weekend. Led by goalkeepepr Chris Shepherd, the Fury did not give up a single goal the entire tournament. This was team's first win in a tournament and was well deserved. The Fury defeated the SAC Classic II, 1-0, in the finals.
Columbia Soccer Club travel
Max Mzhen put the CSC Rockin' Rollers (U-10 boys) on the NCSL scoreboard and in the lead with his goal in the 13th minute of a game against the MSC Mutiny. Just after the half, John Stark launched a score-tilting long pass for Cameron Coates to slip a shot past the keeper en route to the 2-1 victory.
Joshua Chroniger and the Roller defense stole passes, dispossessed attackers and won most 50/50 balls in the game.
Soccer Association of Columbia travel
The SAC United Premier (boys U-12) played two great games last weekend coming away with a win and a tie against Division I opponents.
Chad Strothers (two) and Joe Tolson scored as SAC defeated the Freestate Diplomats, 3-2. Max Dwyer and Tolson had assists. Freestate scored two goals in the second half which forced the SAC defense to fight hard to maintain the team's lead.
The second game was a 1-1 tie with the Baltimore Bays Juventus. SAC scored the first goal when Addison Testoff tapped the ball to Mike Heitzmann, who fired the ball into the net. The Bays responded later in the first half.

Maryland Stars
The Maryland Stars 16-U girls fastpitch team finished second at the Memorial Day Madness tournament played in New Cumberland, Pa.
The Stars went 5-0-1 in pool play then defeated the Lenape Valley Fury, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and the West Shore Attitude, 3-0, in the semifinals before losing to the Central PA Krunch in the championship match.
The Stars received dominant pitching from Haylie Goheen and Amanda Segrist. They gave up only eight runs and 17 hits in eight games prior to the final. They were aided by the strong play of infielders Chelsea Shockey, Erica Makar, Kylie Pritchard and Melanie Slayton and in the outfield by Kelsey Fuller, Erin Beane, Adrienne Carroll and Michelle Clapp. Catchers Kaitlyn Griffith and Chelsea Lucas, provided leadership behind the plate.
The Maryland Stars 14-U Red finished second in the silver bracket of the Memorial Day Madness tournament, earning a berth in the PONY Nationals in July.
In the championship round, the Stars beat the Maryland Chill, 5-4, the Elktown Outlaws, 9-0, and the Wyoming Valley Vipers, 5-4, before losing to the Vienna Stars, 12-2.
The Maryland Stars' deep roster, including pitchers Tori Brown, Alyssa Dixon, Taylor Simmons and Stacie Maring, kept the team going all the way to the championship game.
The Maryland Stars received outstanding defensive play from outfielders Courtney Hastings and Samantha Bost. Catchers Ashley Obrien, Natalie Gill and Hannah Drummond provided excellent defense behind the plate.
At second base, Shelby Cleveland made two backhand plays against the Riviera Beach Spirit, and shortstop Sarah Munsch helped turn five double plays.
Lacrosse
Howard County Lacrosse Program
Navy's successful season came crashing down with a 6-5 overtime loss to Duke in an HCLP Lightning Division playoff game. Top-ranked and undefeated Hopkins also lost.
Navy took a 5-2 lead into the fourth quarter before Duke rallied to send the game into overtime and then win it on the Blue Devils' first possession.
The Duke squad was led by Kyle Sutton, Jace Hull, Evin Moody, William Coakley, Garrison Ferrell, Andrew Lauer, Thomas Phipps, Daniel Benson, Mitchell Cassidy, Sam Dawes, Chris Meekins, Kyle Wiggens, Alexander Pellegrini, Conner Harvey and Kile Weller.
Navy was led by graduating league All-Stars Tyler Bond, Casey Brennan (goal), Christopher Simpson (two goals), Ryan Synk and Bennett Ellrich (goal). They received plenty of help from Herman Mills, Cade Dick, Terrell Credle, Matt Rueter, Kyle Roop, Matt Hulett, Noah Lyu, Ben Oldhouser, Ian Krynski, Michael Kozel and Colin Altman.
A week earlier, Syracuse defeated Navy, 3-2, on goals by Matthew Wingate, Tiger Lindsay and Tyler Holzman.
Bond got the lone Navy strikes, scoring once from the faceoff and again late in the fourth quarter.

DU2R
DU2R's Jeff Timm placed sixth in his age group in the Apple Duathlon in Sartell, Minn on May 24. He then traveled to California for the USAT long course duathlon championships May 31. There he won the 55-59 age group in 5 hours, 45 minutes, 54 seconds. He lead wire to wire. Along with Steve Ruckert winning the 60-64 age group at the USAT standard distance nationals in Richmond, DU2R has two national age group champs for 2009.
Seven club members have qualified for the duathlon world championships in September.

Kangaroo Kids
Members of the Kangaroo Kids competition team competed in jump rope at an AAU tournament June 6 in Woodbridge, Va. There were 99 athletes participating in this tournament from teams in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. The top 10 overall competitors in each division qualify to compete at the AAU Junior Olympics this summer in Des Moines, Iowa.
