Running

Damien's Run, a 5k run and 2-mile walk, will be held June 28 in Columbia Gateway. The race begins at 8 a.m. Proceeds from the event go to nonprofit substance abuse programs such as Damien's Recovery, Inc. Go to www.damien.tv or an online application or call 410-872-5212.

The Howard County Striders are hosting a Friday Night XC Series for anyone who can run a 5k. The races will be held at five different high schools. The first race is June 26 at Centennial. Cost: $5. Complete three of the five races and receive a special T-shirt. More information is available under calendar at www.striders.net.

Cheerleading

The Unique All-Stars cheerleading program in Columbia is looking for boys and girls ages 5-18 and all levels of ability. Private tryouts, scheduled individual by request, are currently being held. Those who try out by July 10 will receive a discount on the first three months tuition. An open tryout will be held Aug. 8 from 10:30-noon.

Sports physicals

Kernan Sports Medicine and the University of Maryland Sports Medicine will offer high school sports physicals, by appointment only, July 26 at Central Maryland Rehabilitation in Columbia from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Sports physicals will also be offered Aug. 2, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at Kernan Physical Therapy in Woodlawn and Aug. 9, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., in College Park. Call 410-298-0990 for an appointment.

Sports camps

The Howard Community College Sports School is offering summer camps as follows:

Volleyball: July 6-10, ages 9-15, morning, afternoon or full day (8:30 a.m-4:30 p.m.).

Coed soccer: July 6-10, ages 5-8, morning (8:30-noon).

Coed fitness/nutrition: ages 9-14, afternoon only.

Boys basketball: ages 9-14, morning, afternoon or full day.

Baseball

The Savage U-8 team is holding tryouts beginning June 23 and 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Bollman Bridge Elementary School. Tryouts/practices will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays through the month of August. Players are encouraged to attend as many days as possible. E-mail k_wyandt@yahoo.com.

Denis Ahearn's Eagles Baseball School will be held June 22-26 and Aug. 3-7 at Centennial High School. The Crab Claw Classic combine will be held Aug. 7 at Joe Cannon Stadium from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 4-8:30 p.m. The combine is for high school baseball players who will graduate in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and are interested in playing college baseball. Basketball

Kevin McDuffie's All Star Basketball Camp will be held in week-long sessions June 22-Aug. 7 at Howard High School. The camp, for boys and girls ages 5-15, runs from 9 a.m-3:30 p.m. and costs $175. A half-day full camp option ($100) is also available. Register by calling 443-414-1821.

Soccer

Tom Marechek's All Pro Lacrosse Camps will be held June 20-23 and June 24-27 at Goucher College. Day, extended day and overnight camps are available. Triathlon

Field hockey

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is registering for its beginner, intermediate and high school development field hockey camps, which run Monday-Thursday. The beginner camp is for ages 8-14 and starts June 29. Cost: $95. The intermediate camp (ages 10-14) runs the week of July 13 and also costs $95. The high school development camp (ages 13-17) runs the week of July 27 (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) and costs $140.
