Softball
Maryland Chill travel
The Maryland Chill Black (12-U girls) participated in the 13-14 Eastern Shore Invitational softball tournament at the Watkins Regional Park, in Largo. The Chill started Saturday with great defense against a tough Maryland Heartbreaker Black team, but came up one run short.
In the next game the Chill put together great defense, offense and pitching, but could not score against the Olney Cougars.
In the third game of the day the Chill got everything going in a 4-2 victory over the Maryland Chill Purple.
On Sunday, the Chill Black dropped two very close games against the Lakeshore Lightning and the Churchfield Lightning.
Chill team members include Madison Vicendese, Imani Torregano, Madeleine Bennett, Gracie Logan, Kayla Clark, Megan Crumling, Alex Cwalina, Lindsay Humphrey, Courtney O'Neill, Lexi Jones and Gabriela Mistichelli.
The Maryland Chill Silver (12-U girls) finished second at the Central Maryland League tournament played in Eldersburg. The Chill Silver defeated the Freedom Firebirds, Germantown Titans and Winfield Sting Black before losing a tight game to the Olney Cougars in the championship match.
Chill Silver received dominant pitching from Katie Smith, who recorded 42 strikeouts and earned three wins. She was aided by strong outfield play from Breanne Smith, Emily Rowe and Emma Adams. Claire Swan, Kristy Selby, Cindy Sheckels, Mara Wedekind and Kelsey Parker all made some great plays in the infield.
Maryland Stars travel
The Maryland Stars Red (14-U girls) won the 16-U age bracket of the USSSA Crabtown Crackdown in Glen Burnie June 13-14. The Stars won four games and lost two, but struggled during pool play.
After losing to the MVSA Storm, the Stars beat the Fillies Fastpitch, 7-2, and then lost to the SYA Xplosion, 3-2, in a weather-shortened game.
The Stars started championship play as the sixth seed, yet easily defeated the third seeded Harford Havoc, 7-0, then the Fillies Fastpitch to reach the championship game. In that game, Howard Countian Natalie Gill slapped two hits in two at-bats as the Stars were victorious.
Winning a 16-U tournament showed great improvement of the team and the fearless attitude regardless of the opponent. With this win the Stars 14-U Red team has qualified for the USSSA World Series at 14-U and 16-U level, the NSA World Series at 14-U and the PONY Nationals at 14-U. This was the second first-place finish of the year and their fifth top finish of the season.
Playing up an age group has pushed the team to play its best every game out. The Stars have a 11-3-1 record against 16-U teams, much better than their record against 14-U teams.

DU2R member Kristina Adams was second overall in the duathlon nationals. J.P. Bacle placed second in the D&B Time Trial in the British Virgin Islands. He clocked a 46:43.
