Bethany Mazlewski, the coach who helped start the Pallotti High field hockey program, does not plan to be the head coach this coming fall season.

She had her third child in April and was on leave from the end of March as a history teacher at the school. Mazlewski said her teaching load will expand from five classes to six in the fall.

Mazlewski said she hopes that a new head coach can be found and that she would consider being an assistant. The Mount Airy resident was the head coach in 2007 when the Panthers fielded a club team for the first time and was the coach in 2008 when Pallotti was a varsity team in the IAAM.

"She did a tremendous job," said Rick Diggs, the Pallotti assistant principal for operation.

"I hate to give it up completely," she said. "I am torn. If (the school) can find a head coach I could come in as an assistant. I just don't think I can be the head coach."

As of June 25 the school was also looking for a head varsity volleyball coach. Those interested in the field hockey or volleyball positions can contact athletic director Steve Walker at 301-725-3228 Ext. 215 or swalker@pallottihs.org.
