Soccer Association of Columbia travel

Labor Day weekend, the SAC United Premier U-12 boys team won the Olney Boys and Girls Community Sports Association's nationally ranked soccer tournament.

The tournament included premier teams from Virginia and Maryland. SAC, playing under a new coach, cruised to the championship game with convincing wins over the Chesapeake United SC Fury and Annapolis United.

The championship game was against the rival Bethesda Lions. Last spring, the Lions beat SAC to win first place in the National Capital Soccer League.

The championship game was scoreless until the final two minutes of the half when a loose ball after a corner kick was kneed in by a Bethesda striker. SAC kept its composure and within 5 minutes of the start of the second half tied the score, 1-1, with a 25-yard kick by left wing Patrick Palin.

After notching the score, United Premier continued to put shots on goal but with no success until approximately 20 minutes into the second half. After a left corner kick by Logan Walker, the ball became free momentarily inside the box. Palin quickly made a break and toed the ball to the left side of the net for his second goal. The 2-1 SAC advantage held until the final whistle.

Overall, United Premier played well together considering this was its first tournament of the season. The team's performance earned it a ranking of third in Maryland and 15th overall in the country.

Members of the team are Kyle Lowenkron, Connor Gwin, Donovan Pines, Kyle Saunderson, Palin, Ben Boone, Tyler Lynton, Chris Behrman, Josh Fawole, Walker and Dylan Royalty.

The SAC U-11 girls, the Flames, won their season opener by defeating the St. Jane Soccer Club, 3-0. Goals were scored by Mary Kate Kalinock, Kimberly McPhearson and Theresa Sarver. Assists came from Katie Kennedy and Caroline Harlin.

Their efforts were supported by the strong goaltending of Madeline Conroy and Katie Kennedy. In addition, those two were supported by the defense and midfield that included Casey Holihan, Allie Doherty, Abbie Snow, Natalie Zakel, Haley Geier and Cecilia Craig.

The SAC United 1 (U-9 boys) played Calvert United to a 4-4- tie in their first travel match ever. Calvert rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit to tie the game.

Ryan Saunderson allowed only one goal while playing keeper. Billy Chen, Justin Harris, William Vasilios and Andrew Ji provided great defense and ball movement from the backline. United's goals were scored by Brennan Reamer, Emre Taskin, Neil Fyock and Alex Hedge, with assists by Justin Harris, Alex Hedge and Billy Chen.

The SAC Ellicott City Extreme (U-14 girls) won the championship of the Father Hooper Memorial Labor Day tournament held in Owings Mills. The Extreme was undefeated in the preliminary rounds and faced a very tough Cockeysville team in the finals that went through double overtime to penalty kicks.

Extreme's Allison Jones, Jessica Schroeder, Nicole Manning, Laura Fratta and Sophia Hamilton and keeper Cheyenne Semmont won the penalty kick duel, 3-2, finishing a very exciting game for all.

Other members of the team are Bailey Funk, Alishia Akhtar, Katie Salim, Danielle Berry, Sarah Maltz, Jenna Harrity, Sophia Komons, Jennifer Skinner, Christine Shen, Yasmine Darrehmane, Shannon Larson, Ashlyn Tavai and Cara Walsh.

Howard Stampede

Howard Stampede team 3 (fifth/sixth grade) opened the season on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Catonsville 2. Megan Hooper, Abigail Werner and Deanna Bulk made several key open-field tackles to help keep the first half scoreless, and Erin Cutroneo and Gabby Cadoux help set up transitional plays that moved the ball into Catonsville territory.

In a game that was all about field position the Stampede controlled it in the second half with key drives by Delaney Treacy and Megan Keller. Julia Sheehan and Abby Overman led several rushes that led to corner opportunities.

The Stampede kept the ball in the Catonsville end most of the second half, and the pressure finally paid off with a 10-foot shot by Jordan Mess with three minutes to play for the eventual game winner. The goal was assisted by Overman and Sheehan. Sophia Kalaris earned the shutout in goal.
