Marriotts Ridge didn't lose last week, but it didn't win either.

The Mustangs opened their county schedule with a 1-1 tie at Centennial. Tori Thompson gave Marriotts Ridge the halftime lead before Nicole Mize tied the game for Centennial. The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods following the 80 minutes of regulation.

Goalies Erica Albornoz and Katie Donegan had nine and four saves, respectively, for Centennial, and Sam Olson had seven saves for Marriotts Ridge.

Three days later, in a game that had been postponed, visiting Wilde Lake and Marriotts Ridge played to a 1-1 deadlock. Both goals were scored in the first half.

Katie Kanner scored off a cross from Amanda Grote to give Marriotts Ridge the lead before Carly Solow tied the game for Wilde Lake. Olson had five saves for the Mustangs and Christine Dougherty had eight for the Wildecats.

"In both games, we've had opportunities, but struggled to finish the ball off," Marriotts Ridge coach Robin Grey said. "Looking at the big picture, though, we're moving in the right direction. Each game, we are continuing to improve. Given our youth, that's what is important. Hopefully, as we gain confidence, we'll start putting some teams away."

Centennial rebounded from the tie and posted its second win of the season, a 1-0 victory at Institute of Notre Dame. Nikkie Mize scored in the second half for the Eagles, who got 10 saves from Albornoz.

Reservoir came back from its shutout loss at Glenelg with victories over Hammond and Chapelgate.

Goals from midfielders Megan Armstrong, Katlyn Axenfeld and Sarah Hermina sparked the Gators to a 3-0 win over the visiting Golden Bears. Reservoir outshot Hammond, 14-5.

"It was a good game for us to get back on our feet and also a good confidence builder going into the future," Reservoir coach Josh Sullivan said.

Three days later, Reservoir used four second-half goals to rout Chapelgate, 5-1, at Western Regional Park.

"Everything really came together for us in this game, particularly the things that we have been working on throughout the season. It was refreshing to see," Sullivan said.

A shot by Hermina was redirected by a Chapelgate defender to give Reservoir a 1-0 halftime lead. Michelle Viegas scored early in the second half off corner kick volley, then one-touch passes from Viegas to Megan Armstrong led to Kelsey Reiff's goal. Stephanie Zaycer scored the two other goals, one on a thru ball from Katherine Tuttle and the other on a cross from Tuttle that Zaycer headed in.

Chapelgate, which plays in the IAAM B Conference, scored with about 10 minutes left off a corner kick when Julia Shackelford volleyed the ball in.

A day after its big win over Reservoir, Glenelg earned a 1-0 win at Mt. Hebron. Kristen Schmidbauer's second-half goal off an assist from Danielle Burris was the difference. Mt. Hebron goalie Karen DiGangi had 13 saves.

Mt. Hebron later dropped a 4-1 decision at Fallston.

Atholton rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat visiting Long Reach, 3-2.

"Long Reach came out ready to play," Atholton coach Stephanie Stoutenborough said.

The Lightning enjoyed a 2-0 halftime lead courtesy of goals by Kristen Fawole. The Raiders rallied on goals by Lizzy Parr, Emily Bode and Talisa Henry, and Christina Downs had an assist.

River Hill got goals from six players and defeated host Oakland Mills, 6-0. Allie Kohr and Amy Triscoli had unassisted goals. Anna Theisen, Sally Meehan, Tope Olujobi and Liz Bamber added scores and Maya Dillard, Kellie Song, Carylynne Hudson and Hailey Cirovski recorded assists.

Howard earned its first county win with a 3-1 decision at Wilde Lake. Nicole Clark, Kristen Shea and Allison Green scored for the Lions. Gina Colarusso had two assists and Allison Green had the other. Natalia Taylor scored for Wilde Lake with an assist by Beth Glaros.

Glenelg Country School is still looking for its first win of the season. The Dragons are 0-3 in IAAM B Conference play and 0-4 overall.

Sonia Swaray, the team's No. 1 singles, had an exciting match against Friends. Swaray won many long rallies and scored her second win of the season, 6-4, 6-4. Hers was Glenelg Country's only win of the day.

Danni Weiner lost, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. In doubles, Maddy Taylor and Allie Duncan lost a close match, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 team of Amina Mahmood and Neha Jhaveri fell, 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 3 team of Katya Rice and Rebecca Dornan lost, 6-0, 6-0.

Field hockey

Overtime was the order of the day Sept. 17. Three games went into extra periods and two were decided in strokes.

Hammond defeated Wilde Lake in strokes. The game was tied, 1-1, after the second overtime.

"It was so exciting that you would have thought it was for the county championship," said Hammond coach Martie Dyer.

Kelly Tucker had the Hammond goal in regulation. Ashley Holson, Taylor Leaper and Morgan Mesol all converted their strokes to give the Golden Bears the victory.

Reservoir edged Howard in strokes as well. The game was 2-2 at the end of the overtime periods. Reservoir won its final stroke, a shot by Kari DeHof.

Mikayla Abrams and Katja Randazzo scored in regulation for Howard. Their goals were matched by Reservoir's Molly Garza and Alexandra Taylor.

In the Battle of Route 99, Mt. Hebron slipped by Marriotts Ridge, 3-2, in overtime. Jenna Boarman scored all three Mt. Hebron goals. The game-winner came with 1:15 left.

Marriotts Ridge had a 2-0 advantage in the second half, but couldn't maintain it.

"We out-cornered them and we outshot them. It's a little frustrating," Marriotts Ridge coach Stacie Gado said. It was the Mustangs' second overtime loss in four games.

Kirsten Walker (goal, assist), Michelle Jeffers (goal) and Bri Hanlon (assist) figured in the Mustangs' scoring.

The goals that came so easily at the beginning of the season are more illusive now for Long Reach. The Lightning lost to Atholton, 5-1, and River Hill, 2-0, last week.

The River Hill game was a tight game the whole way, Long Reach coach Melissa McCarthy said.

The game was scoreless at the half. A send by Ellie Woolls and a deflection by Kelsey Owens resulted in River Hill's first score. The Hawks scored again with five minutes left on a corner. Lindsay McIntyre had the goal and Morgan Wynne the assist.

River Hill goalie Jordan Levy had eight saves. Her Long Reach counterpart, Kristen Reggie, had five.

Centennial blanked Oakland Mills, 5-0, as MaryBeth Devitt, Hayden Hutzell, Shreya Khadke (two) and Tori Millhollon scored.

Alexis Novotny had 13 saves for Oakland Mills.

Atholton's Melanie Slayton scored with an assist from Allie Durso to spoil a Glenelg shutout, 4-1. Kayleigh Hinkle, Brittany Baker, Danielle Baker and Mary Kate Olson tallied in Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid's 300th field hockey victory.

Glenelg Country beat St. James, 3-2, in a non-conference game. The visiting Dragons had to adjust to a fast, bumpy field. Claire McAuliffe, Amy Keth and Sam Weinstein scored for Glenelg Country. Brittney Jorgenson had an assist. Madelyn McClung had two saves in the first half and Sarah Bates had four in the second half.

In an earlier game, Bates made 13 saves in Glenelg Country's 1-0 loss to McDonogh. She also stopped a 1v1 fastbreak. Jorgenson, Alisha Spencer and Allie Pickens played well and helped keep their team in the game.

Atholton continued its hot start against Long Reach, winning, 5-0, for the team's third consecutive shutout. The Raiders outscored their first three opponents by a combined 11-0 margin.

"We have been a defensive team for a long time, but now we have a couple scorers up top to round ourselves out a little bit," coach Roch DeFrances said.

After losing to Atholton in its first county game, Howard bounced back with a double-overtime victory over Wilde Lake, 3-2, Sept. 15. The Lions got two goals from Ryan Masterlerz and another from Bryan Dickens. Howard's Wesley Furr chipped in with a couple assists in a game that evened the team's record at 2-2 overall.

Marriotts Ridge knocked off Centennial, 4-1, to even its county record at 1-1. Mike Glazer (two), Josh Stover and Brad Martinelli accounted for the Mustang goals, while Patrick Sullivan (two), Kareem Najib and Kwadwo Owusu-Boaitey had assists.

In the loss, the Eagles got 11 saves from goalie Aaron Russell.

Glenelg Country lost a tough, 2-1, game against Severn. The Dragons went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Jimmy Tangires off an assist from Andrew Trahan in the 65th minute.

But the lead didn't last as Severn scored to tie things with seven minutes left in regulation and then produced the golden goal less than two minutes into overtime.

After picking up a close victory over Marriotts Ridge in its second match of the season, the Centennial girls have continued picking up momentum en route to its current 8-0 record. The Eagles recently knocked off Atholton Sept. 17, 46-29, at the Timbers at Troy.

Atholton narrowly defeated Centennial, 86-85, on Sept. 17 to improve to 8-0 and escape its closest match of the season. Morgan Hill led the Raiders with 24 points, while Chris Biggins was right behind him with 23. Centennial was led by Braden Poe's 23-point effort.

Reservoir senior Julie Poston recorded a double-double -- 20 kills and 10 aces -- in a win over Hammond last week.

Howard improved to 2-0 with a five-game win over defending county finalist Wilde Lake last week.

Shana Nelson, Wilde Lake's 6-foot-4 middle hitter, was dominant throughout the match, recording 12 kills and six point blocks, but her Lions counterpart, 5-foot-9 Lindsey Kostkowski, came through in the deciding fifth game to swing the match in Howard's favor. Of her 15 kills and three point blocks, four and two came in the final game, which Howard won, 15-7, after opening a 7-1 lead.

"It was difficult having to hit around (Nelson) but we all did really well hitting spots," Kostkowski said.

Wilde Lake was without its top defensive player, Jessica Turner, who was sick.

Long Reach hosted Chapelgate Monday afternoon and won in a three-game sweep.

Despite a combined 11 kills and seven aces between Chapelgate's quartet of Paige Whipple, Emily Martin, Lauren Landis and Amy Trageser in the last two games, Long Reach won the match by making less unforced errors.

Long Reach got a strong performance in game three from freshman setter Shelby Frederickson (two kills) and middle hitter Awashima Diwa (kill, two point blocks).

Chapelgate ran into a buzzsaw when Covenant Community, a team of home-schooled athletes based in Ellicott City, came to visit. Covenant won the match, 25-5, 25-17, 25-14.

They were led by Rebecca Johnston (17-for-17 serving, seven aces), Meredith Runkle (16-for-18 serving, six aces, 18 assists) and Lillie Happel (13 kills).

Glenelg Country improved to 2-0 with a win over Friends, before dropping their first match of the season Monday to Catholic. Sophomore Lauren Dawson led the way with nine aces, Maria Sloan and Hannah Leone added six each and Ashley Hayes had four. Sloan tallied 26 assists and Emily Sandford had 11 digs.

Thomas Erdman had two tackles for losses, and a sack.

The Lightning special teams struck twice for big plays -- a 77-yard kickoff return by Travis Preston and a 65-yard punt return by Adam Reed -- but the Hawks' defense held both times.

For the second week in a row, Hammond -- winless in 2008 and 2007 -- nearly upset one of the county's top teams. On Friday against Wilde Lake, the Bears missed an extra point that would have given them the lead with five minutes left. Then, while running the clock out to set up overtime, the Bears fumbled and Wilde Lake scored the winning TD on a 24-yard pass from Joe Kelly to Khalil Vierra with 18 seconds left.

Freshman tailback Dionte Jones scored twice for Hammond.

Wilde Lake went into halftime with the lead after two Joe Kelly touchdowns -- a 12-yard pass to Greg Meighen and a 3-yard quarterback keeper.

Glenelg joined River Hill and Atholton at the top of the county standings with a 28-13 win over Howard to improve to 3-0. Glenelg's Colin Osborne rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, caught two passes for 54 yards and made seven tackles.
