Four out of five girls soccer teams won first-round playoff games last week, including Hammond, which advanced in the Class 2A South bracket by forfeit over Frederick Douglass-PG.

Also in the Class 2A South, Oakland Mills earned its second victory of the season with a 4-0 decision over Central. Bonnie Carney, Malak Soussi, Mary Grace Grandfield and Alicia Wooten scored for the Scorpions.

Long Reach ended its season with a 3-1 loss at Southern-AA. It also marked the seventh and final season of coaching for Josh Webster, who announced before the season started that he would step down to spend more time with his family.

Grace Bonner's goal tied the game for the Lightning (3-12) before Southern pulled away. Webster said that, "Jess Sachs played a phenomenal game at center mid, while Erin Miller, Grace Bonner, Molly Piffath and Katie Haarer all played well defensively."

In Class 3A East action, Mt. Hebron got goals from Liz Trainer and Kristina Humm to defeat host Stephen Decatur, 2-0. Trainer gave the Vikings a 1-0 halftime lead from an assist by Susie Halper, a freshman called up from the junior varsity. Humm scored in the second half off an assist from Mo O'Malley.

Howard advanced with a 6-1 victory over visiting James M. Bennett. Bennett scored three minutes into the game. Allison Green tied the game off an assist from Alyssa Kozlowski 20 minutes into the half. Five minutes later Kendall Neff scored off a direct kick to put the Lions ahead for good. Lauren Groft finished a perfect cross from Julia Cocozza and Rashel Taylor scored off an assist from Gina Colarusso to make it 4-1 at halftime.

Mackenzie Calhoun celebrated her birthday with two second-half goals on assists from Neff and Nicole Clark.

Football

Centennial's 28-22 win at Howard Oct. 31 was a case of good news, bad news.

On the good side, the Eagles beat a quality Howard team that has made the playoffs the past two seasons to improve to 4-5 after starting the season 1-4.

On the bad side, senior Kyle Young, the team's offensive and defensive workhorse since he was a sophomore, tore the ACL and MCL in his knee, and had a slight tear of the meniscus, ending his career at Centennial.

"I'm just so disappointed for him," coach Ken Senisi said. "He's got a great work ethic, so I know he will be back.

In week eight, Young broke the Centennial records for touchdowns and tackles in a career.

"I'm glad he broke some of those records last week," Senisi said. "He's definitely been a big part of why we are where we are."

Young finishes his career with 1,901 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns, and 248 total tackles (23 for loss, also a school record).

Senisi said that several colleges were interested in Young before the injury and he hopes they'll stand by their offers.

Centennial opened a 21-0 lead and was ahead, 21-7, at halftime, but Howard got to within one touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Eagles ended the game with a big stop on fourth-and-1.

Centennial's Matt Harbinson threw touchdown passes to Marcos Ocadiz and Justin Calloway, and ran one in himself. Boris Gamazaychikov also scored on a 20-yard run.

Glenelg won a shootout against the high powered Mt. Hebron offense, 37-20.

The Gladiators held the Vikings to negative rushing yardage, but Mt. Hebron senior quarterback Clint Huber passed for almost 300 yards, completing 25-of-37 attempts, and three touchdowns with eight passes each to Spencer Wilkins (113 yards, touchdown) and Mike McCarthy (94 yards, two touchdowns). Glenelg's defense produced nine points on a 42-yard Ross Ryan interception return, and a Jimmy Zito safety.

Oakland Mills won its first game of the season, ending a 15-game losing streak, 16-13, at winless Marriotts Ridge Oct. 30.

Marriotts Ridge scored first on a touchdown by Armani Dixon, but then the Scorpions came back with a Trayvonn Lee touchdown to make the score 7-6 after a missed extra point. The Mustangs then scored and missed the PAT for a 13-6 lead. Neko Rynn-Mason kicked a 28-yard field goal to trim the lead to 13-9. Then, a Chris Childers interception right before halftime set up a Jarrod Montoya to Troy Schofield 30-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the game winner. The second half was scoreless.

"Both defenses buckled down, both teams played great," said Oakland Mills coach Jimmy DiPietro, who won his first game as head coach.

Wilde Lake defeated Long Reach, 16-7, Friday to keep its playoff hopes alive. Scott Korzienowski scored first on a 5-yard run to give the Lightning a 7-0 lead, but then the Wildecat defense shut the doors. Devon McCoy recovered a fumble, Christian Hough, Nick Pelletier and Joe Kelly each made interceptions, and Mike Smith (three), Greg Meighen and Eric Smith teamed up for five sacks. Wilde Lake scored on a three-yard run by E.J. Gilman and a 10-yard run by Hough, and converted twice on two-point conversions: a pass from Joe Kelly to Meighen, and a run by Khalil Viera (team high 117 yards).

Reservoir won its senior game over Hammond Oct. 31, 34-12. It was the Gators' highest scoring output of the season.

Bryce Boring scored touchdowns on a 24-yard pass from Andy Bushong and a 30-yard interception return, and three other seniors scored: Robby Greer (50-yard run on opening play from scrimmage), Chris Morris (six-yard run) and Andy Bushong (3-yard run). The Gators scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Devon Paye (1-yard run) and Payton Rose (nine-yard pass from Josh Whaley) scored for Hammond.

Volleyball

Marriotts Ridge lost its last two games of the regular season, but in completely different ways. The Mustangs lost to Wilde Lake Oct. 27, then took 14-time state champion Centennial to five Oct. 29. Megan Lucas had a career game on her Senior Night, recording 18 kills.

The Eagles still won the match, 25-22, 24-26, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9, to finish the regular season undefeated.

Covenant Community School won its first game of the Maryland/D.C. private school volleyball tournament Monday night, sweeping Holy Cross, 27-25, 25-12, 25-20.

Meredith Runkle had four aces and 19 assists and Lillie Happel had nine kills and 15 digs in the win.

The Bravehearts now advance to the semifinals, Nov. 10 at Mount de Sales, against Model or Good Counsel.
