Football

Columbia Ravens

The Columbia Ravens 10-12 National team advanced to the semifinal round of the Maryland State Youth Football Championship by defeating the Belair Terps, 34-22. The Terps were Harford/Baltimore County youth football champions.

Brian Jangro passed for three of the Ravens touchdowns. Those touchdown passes were to Chase Conley (a 75-yard pass), Conley (30-yard pass) and Keon Paye (25-yard pass).

Malik Holland sealed the game with two touchdowns. One was a 28-yard burst up the middle, the other was a 16-yard run. Saul Whitaker kicked both extra points.

The offensive line of Ryan Gallagher, Connor Jangro, John Koh, Austin Mitchell, Whitaker, Tyler Gormus and Nick Saunders helped the Ravens gain 185 yards on 33 carries. Leading the way were Holland (105 yards), Ashley (60), Malik Davis (10), R.J. Hobson (two).

Jangro threw for 255 yards. Conley caught passes for 130 yards, Ashley for 70, Paye for 40 and Davis for 15.

The Ravens' defense was anchored with tackles from Darius Khademi, Koh (three), Whitaker (six), Paye (five), Damien Farmer (three), Miles Franklin (two), Malik Jackson (six), Holland (three), Ashley (two), Saunders (nine), Mitchell, Conley (five) and Davis (three).

Conley recovered a fumble and Davis had the game's only interception which he returned 60 yards.

Mid Maryland Youth Football League

The Mid Maryland Youth Football League has named its all-star teams. Members of the Howard County teams are:

8-10: Patriots Donovan Nicastro, Moses Ulysses, Evan Riss, Jason Chappell, Nick Varner, Corey Eudell and Darian Kassiri; Warhawks Chance Campbell, Evan Fochtman, Noah Kalishman and Jarrett Snoots; Terps Shawn Harris, Brian Cook and Lance Madden; Steelers Dyon Basdeo, Jelani Dula and Zack Roski; Ravens Colton Henry, Lemond Bynoe, Sam Wiedorfer and Kyle Farrar. They will face the RFL Montgomery County All-Stars Dec. 13 at Our Lady of Good Counsel.

9-11: Ravens Trey Simpson, Al Rivera, Tino Ellis, Myles Smith, Korey Steven and Ike Schurman; Terps Malik Anderson and Andrew Comeua; Steelers Eric Wright, Jordan Chandler and Kevin Rankin; Patriots Joe Hall, Sonny Csorba, Conner Maloney, Jabari Thornton, Sam Dingle and Jake Lubbehusen; Hurricanes Steve McNair, Kevin Sheahin and Andy Belush. Soccer

Soccer Association of Columbia travel

SAC Columbia United (U-17 girls) won the MSSL 2009 Winter Showcase tournament in Fort Dix, N.J. Nov. 21-22. The team clinched a spot in the championship game with wins over a New Jersey team, 4-0, and a Massachusetts team, 1-0, and a scoreless tie with a Pennsylvania team.

Goals in the preliminary games were scored by Grace Bonner (two, assisted by Kristina Humm and Ashley Weisenberg), Natalie Powell (assisted by Joni Pohutsky), Malory Brunett (assisted by Rebecca Leopold) and Humm (assisted by Powell). With outstanding goalkeeping by Ari Willem and relentless defense by Danielle Roarty, Caileen Ryan, Stephanie Valera and Alli Hogan United did not give up a goal in the first-round games.

The championship game was a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation with Columbia's goal scored by Humm off a corner kick by Bonner with five minutes remaining. The championship was decided by penalty kicks, 4-1, for Columbia. United's four PK's were made by Bonner, Pohutsky, Julia Nicholson and Jamie Melcher.

Willem was "grace under fire" in the penalty kick phase of the game, making an incredible save to ensure the win. The tremendous team effort also included guest player, Christina Horne.

The SAC Chaos (U-13 girls) won the Silver Division of the SAC Columbia Fall Classic soccer tournament Nov. 21 at Covenant Park. The Chaos, with Cassidy Burns and Marisa Grant sharing goalkeeping duties, gave up only one goal during the entire tournament.

The defense was anchored by Virginia Lampron, Cathy Gonzalez, Madeline Lee and Celeste Costabile. The midfield was controlled by Lauren Hessler, Tiara Lacey, Kristen Lafferty and Sarah Hulit. Maria Plano scored both goals for Chaos and was assisted on offense by Abby MacDonand, Courtney Doyle and Averie Stovall.

The Chaos won the semifinal and championship on penalty kicks as Kristen Stark scored in both shootouts and Sarah Hannan scored the winning penalty kick. Burns was awesome in goal for each shootout.

Swimming

Columbia Clippers

The Columbia Clippers sent 54 swimmers to the Arena Club Aquatics' HarvestFest meet Nov. 14-15. Clippers placing in the top eight were:
