Futsal

Central Maryland Futsal All-Stars

The Central Maryland Futsal All-Stars, an under-16 boys soccer team, won the Maryland State Futsal championship Jan. 3. The team is made up of players from the Columbia Soccer Club's U-16 boys team, the Galaxy Premier. Futsal is an indoor soccer game played on a hard surface using a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation soccer ball.

After losing the opener to the Baltimore Bays Blues (Barcelona), 4-3, the Central Maryland Futsal All-Stars went on to go unbeaten in five games finishing 4-1-1 and topping the division with 13 points.

The flight included rising National Capital Soccer League Division 2 Laurel Wildcats (Dutch Soccer School), Region I Colonial League Baltimore Bays Blues (Barcelona), and 2009 U.S. Futsal Federation finalist Denison Cabral Futsal Academy Corinthians.

Gymnastics

Docksiders

Docksiders' Level 9 and 10 teams traveled to Boston for the Brestyan's Invitational Jan. 16-17. The Level 10 team achieved another victory, winning by more than two points over Brestyan's. The Level 10 team victory has won all three of its competitions.

Stephanie Ouellette, a senior at Long Reach High School, won the all-around in the Senior B age group (17+ ) with a 37.20. In addition to her all-around win, Ouellette took the individual champion title in uneven bars (8.70) and floor exercise (9.40). She placed second on vault (9.55) and balance beam (9.55).

Top Flight Gymnastics

The Level 5-8 Top Flight girls competed in Virginia at the World Class Invitational and in Pennsylvania at the Barb Knothe Invitational. The Level 4 girls competed in the Evergreen Invitational.

Lacrosse

Maryland RoughRiders

The Maryland RoughRiders U-18 Elite team, composed primarily of Howard County players, took third place at the NDP Dick's Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions earlier this month in Tampa, Fla.

The RoughRiders finished the 2009 summer/fall campaign with an astonishing 46-4 record. All four losses were by one goal each, including the 8-7 loss to eventual champion Edge Senior (Toronto) in the NDP TOC tournament.

Volleyball

Columbia Volleyball Club

The Columbia Lightning (16-U) finished in second place out of 10 teams at the BAVA 16 Invitational tournament at St. Mary's College Jan. 10. After dominating pool play without losing a set, the team won its semifinal match against Evolution 16 (Alexandria, Va.) 2-0, before losing a close match to the MVSA 16 Fierce (Gaithersburg), 25-21, 25-22.

Tinuke Ibitola and Anna Kearns anchored a hard-hitting attack with setting from Grace Chao. Jenna Connors and Jaimie Fabling were core to blocking the middle. Taylor Simpson was the libero for most of the day. Other strong defensive support came from Allie Cable and Sara Calvert. Strong serving and all-around play from Anastasia White-Torruellas and Nikki Hurley rounded out the team's success.

The Columbia Condors (14-U) earned a silver medal at the Columbia 13/14 Invite Tournament on Jan. 10 at the Volleyball House. The field of 12 teams came from across Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.

The Condors finished preliminary pool play with an 8-1 record. Success in the playoffs came with convincing wins against Arlington Volleyball Club and then Ichiban Katana (Haymarket, Va.) in the semifinals. The Condors lost to the Brandywine Bobcats in the finals.

Team members include Mallory Baldwin, Sydney Biniak, Natalie Bockmiller, Jamie Carey, Kristen Flint, Jessie Link, Emme Petti, Kristen Ritchie, Meg Ross, Lindsey Scepura, Elyse Smith and Nicole Wheeler.

Howard County Striders

Despite the cold and rainy conditions, 50 runners came out Jan. 17 for the first Howard County Strider weekly series race of 2010. The 5k took place at Atholton High School and Karston Brown and Heather Ferron won their respective divisions.

Rock climbing

Earth Treks

The Earth Treks climbing team had one of its best days of the season at the regional championship at the Triangle Rock Club. Earth Treks climbers posted six first place and six second place finishes in the 10 available categories. To top the weekend off, Earth Treks won the team championship.

Earth Treks will be taking its largest group ever to the American Bouldering Series nationals. Advancing are Ben Witham, Brandon Lieuw, Nick Cotten, Griffin Whiteside, Ryan Youra, Kayla Lieuw, Jules Jimreivat, Clarissa Sheltraw, Kerry Scott, Nicole Hansen, Alice Pugh and Brennah Rosenthal.
