Soccer
Thunder Soccer Club travel
The Thunder Shockwave (U-12 girls) won their CMSSL game against GBGC, 6-0, with a hat trick from Keri Rager, a goal from Heather Glasser and Alexis Wheeler and a penalty kick shot from Rachel Cynor.
Ellen Jefferson and Kelly Shea did a good job of redistributing the ball in the midfield, and Samantha Terrill, Rachel Fishman and Tory LaFemina played tough to keep GBGC away from the net where Lauren McDonald had some impressive saves in goal.
The Thunder Strikers (U-12 girls) won their WAGS game against the Chan Chan Revolution, 2-1. Both goals were scored by Keri Rager; Selena Chin had an assist on the second shot. Defenders Blair Bonner, Natalie Chin, Rachel Cynor, Kaelin Shaw and Victoria Simpson and midfielders Colleen Axenfeld, Jaime Cooper, Heather Glasser and Ellen Jefferson worked hard to keep their opponent away from the net, where goalkeeper Emily Wolf had a strong day.
Soccer Association of Columbia travel
Kasey Gibbons, Ashley Ensor and Amy Egan helped the SAC United Flash (U-9 girls) come from behind in the second half to defeat Bethesda Blue, 5-4. The offense was supported by defenders Kristen Edwards and Suzy Byun. Kirsten Wikner, Sarah Binkley, Jayme Choe and Kate Johnson worked hard to keep Bethesda out of scoring position.
Brooke Walker and Katie Kennedy successfully fought off numerous attempts on goal.
The SAC United Premier (U-11 boys, NCSL Division 1) defeated CYA United, 7-1. SAC opened the game with the first goal scored on a free kick by Jacob Soriano. CYA responded with is first goal, but SAC took control of the game by scoring three more times in the first half. Those scores came from Joe Tolson (two) and Alex Lingg. Max Dwyer and Chris Haskins assisted on Tolson's goals; Chad Strothers assisted Lingg.
SAC's show of offensive power continued in the second half with goals from Tolson, Mike Heitzmann and Javier Ward. Haskins and Lingg each had assists.
A strong defense and efforts by goalie Chris Johnson prevented CYA from scoring.

Howard County Striders
Ted Poulos and Karen Shouse were the top two-milers during the Howard County Striders' weekly races at Thunder Hill May 18. Luis Diaz and Katie O'Dunne led the 10k race with their first-place victories. Several runners 50 and older participated in the 10k, designated as one of the "Great Grand Master" series races.

HCPL Lightning league
Hobart fought its way back to win its fourth game of the season, 7-5, against a solid Hopkins squad. The Statesmen attack was led by Daine Vandewall (four goals), Raffi Mannarelli (two), Grant Hanlon (one) and supported by Wes Tomlinson, Ned Menton, Ryan Synk and Kyle Roop. The hustle of middies Paul Cook, Christopher Simpson, Casey Brennan, James Heimsoth and Austin Ohnmacht won numerous ground ball battles. The defensive efforts of Terrell Credle, Steven Hilliard and Tyler Bond helped seal the game.
Hopkins was led by the emerging play of Zach Aldrich which earned him a game ball. Goals were scored by Nick Sabella (two), Brian Decker, Brendan Youngs and Sachin Kuruvilla. Sean Divver and Nick Morton played a good all-around game.
Hopkins outlasted Navy, 4-2. Navy goals were scored by Sean Armiger and Will Miller, and aggressive play was added by Hayden Mikk, Casey Waller, Sam Kraus and Jarrett Snoots.
Hopkins was led by Brian Decker's great all-around play, which earned him a game ball. He also scored a goal. Ian Salazar played goalie in the first half with five saves, and then moved to field defense in the second half. He also earned a game ball.
Brendan Youngs led the Hopkins scorers with two goals, and Chris Moy netted his third goal of the year. Brent Fischbein, among others, contributed to a solid team victory.
Hopkins defeated Georgetown, 8-4, as Matt Baxter played his best game of the season, contributing numerous ground balls, tough defense and an assist. Brady Burnett led the team with three goals and an assist; Youngs had two goals and two assists. Moy, Zach Beard and Kuruvilla rounded out the scoring.
Brian Decker handed out two assists, Bryce Baliff made offensive contributions and Jake Smith was fantastic in goal.
Georgetown was led by Bailey Tabor's two goals and one assist. Daniel Hopkins (goal, assist), Ryan Tuma (goal) and Garrett Lally (two assists) contributed to the team's scoring. Teagan Ringstad and Bennett Buch played well in the goal.
Notre Dame knocked off previously undefeated Hobart, 5-1, with goals from Luke Boorady (first of the year), Clark Smith and Matthew Kennedy (two each). Great field play by Danny Callahan, Eric Biegel, Jeffrey Kordenbrock, Ryan Tiffey, Bladen Miller and Jackson Duffy controlled the ball against the high powered offense of Hobart.
The Notre Dame defense was anchored by goalie Guy Scarpaci assisted by defenders Josh Koller, Stephen Shumacher, Zeke Narcise, Josh Dahan and Jacob Dahan.
The lone strike for Hobart was fired by Grant Hanlon, backed by the unusually quiet offense of Kyle Roop, Raffi Mannarelli, Casey Brennan, Ned Menton, Austin Ohnmacht, James Heimsoth and Daine Vandewall.
After being rocked for four goals in the first half, the Hobart defense, with keeper Chris Simpson supported by Terrell Credle, Steven Hilliard, Ryan Synk, Zach Meyers, Paul Cook and Tyler Bond, came to life.

Pitch, Hit and Run
The Howard County Recreation and Parks department held the Howard County Pitch, Hit and Run contest May 11 at Western Regional Park.
The winners of this sectional competition qualify to participate in the team champoinship to be held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, in Baltimore. The sectional age-group winners were:
7-8 baseball: Jeremy Huffman, EYO, 402 points.
7-8 softball: Courtney Furr, Howard County, 229.
9-10 baseball: James Cain, EYO, 652.
11-12 baseball: Peter Solomon, HCYP, 914.
13-14 baseball: Zach Davis, Taneytown, 818.
Triathlon
DU2R Multisport
Last weekend DU2R Multisport had two members racing in Florida and seven others competing in the Columbia Triathlon.
In Florida, Kerri Robbins won the 35-39 age in the Sharks Triathlon with a time of 2:18:46. Lee Wilk placed third in the 50-54 age group in the Sharks Duathlon (2:28:32).
In the Columbia Triathlon, Suzy McCulloch placed third in 25-29 (2:27:44);
Trey Cassidy was seventh in the 40-44 (2:16:37); Scott Heyrick placed fourth in 14-17 (2:59:52); Kristina Adams placed sixth in 35-39 (2:38:59); Chuck Potter placed 61st in the 35-39 (2:36:07); Michele McGleish placed 26th in the 40-44 (2:52:31); and Judi Carbary placed fourth in the 55-59 (3:10:43).
