Virginia capped a perfect season by edging Hobart, 6-5, late in the fourth quarter May 29. The Cavaliers' strikes came from James Felix (three goals, three assists), Max Wike (two goals), Greg Nelson (goal). Jake Smith had an assist.
Hobart battled back to tie the game three times. The Statesmen received goals from Daine Vandewall (two), Grant Hanlon, Austin Ohnmacht and Casey Brennan. The attack was supported by Kyle Roop, who won many ground ball battles, Steven Hilliard, Paul Cook and Zach Meyers. Excellent play from middies, Raffi Mannarelli, James Heimsoth, Tyler Bond -- who also played goalie -- and Ned Menton kept pace with Virginia. The defense, led by Wes Tomlinson, Ryan Synk, Terrell Credle and goalie Christopher Simpson, did a good job of holding the high powered UVA attack to six goals.
First-seeded Syracuse defeated fourth-seeded Hobart, 8-6, in a first-round playoff game on May 31. Hobart took an early lead on goals from Austin Ohnmacht (two), Grant Hanlon, Daine Vandewall and Christopher Simpson, who scored his first goal of the season.
Syracuse managed to tie the game up at half time and the teams battled back and forth until Syracuse went up in the final minutes. All but one of the Syracuse goals were assisted. Goals were scored by Alex Stephanos, Tyler Holzman (two), Austin Robertson, Brock Palmer (two) and Matthew Wingate (two). The defense was anchored by new goalies Ari Mahowald and Robertson, Michael Kutchenkov, Nick Coburn and Nick Ehrenreich. Storm Semmont, Jack Kavka, Anthony Strunk and Kyle House all contributed to the victory.
Hobart's defense was led by Terrell Credle, Ned Menton, Steven Hilliard, James Heimsoth and goalie Tyler Bond. The attack and middies of Kyle Roop, Raffi Mannarelli, Casey Brennan, Wes Tomlinson, Paul Cook and Zach Meyers fought hard, but came up just short in what was a very fun and exciting season.

The AYRA National League (age 11-12) ended its regular season last weekend. The Cubs took the season title by going 10-0-1, a very rare undefeated season. The final game on June 1 between the Cubs and Mets was a hard-fought contest that ended with the Cubs winning, 9-8. Aidan Cunningham was one of the heroes with a grand slam. Adam Whaley also helped the Cubs with a pair of homers.
The Mets were the beneficiary of timely pitching from Kyle Zelkoski and hits from Charlie McLaughlin.
The Nationals secured the third seed in the league playoffs by defeating the Cardinals in a game marked by many excellent plays by both teams, including a key two-run single by Jonah Arnheim of the Nats, and strong play at first base by Tony Grabow of the Cards. In the end, Nats pitchers Tim Byrd, Josh Pickens and Jacob Snyder were able to hold off the strong bats of the Cardinals to secure the win.
On May 31, the Cubs beat the Dodgers, 5-4, in a well-played game that ended with the winning run scoring from third base just before a clap of thunder. Matt Hepner, who had earlier driven a home run to the trees, scored the winning run for the Cubs. Cody Smorse contributed a home run, triple and single to the Dodger cause. Good pitching and defense are what made this a great game.
Final standings: Cubs, 10-0-1; Dodgers, 7-3-1; Nationals, 4-7-0; Mets, 4-6-1; Cardinals, 2-8-1.
