Running

The Howard County Striders' Summer Sizzler series races begin June 18. These weekly races are held on Wednesday evenings, beginning at 7 p.m. The next races in the series are June 18 at Elkhorn/Savage (two miles and 10k) and June 25 at Burleigh Manor (two miles and five miles). Damien's Run 5k or 2-mile walk will be held Sun., June 22 starting at 8 a.m. at 6711 Columbia Gateway Drive, in Columbia. There are cash awards for the top three male and female finishers. Proceeds from the event go to nonprofit substance abuse programs such as Damien's Recovery, Inc. which offers scholarships for students studying in the health field. The Summer Striders, a high school cross country program, will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until Aug. 14. To participate runners need to be able to run three miles without stopping. Practice starts at 6:45 p.m., and runners are asked to commit to run at least four times a week. Go to www.striders.net.

The Centennial Fun Run season begins Tue., June 17 at 7:30 p.m. This family oriented one-mile fun run is held in the Centennial neighborhood. The first night's race is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The suggested donation is $2. The Fun Run will also be held June 24, July 8 and 22, Aug. 5 and 12. Call 410-465-7735.

Wrestling

The East Coast Champ Wrestling Camp is accepting applications. The camp will be held June 23-27 at Oakland Mills High School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost: $160. There is a $10 discount for families with two or more campers. Call 410-312-9151 (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

Sports physicals

Kernan Sports Medicine is offering high school sports physicals July 27, 8 a.m-12:30 p.m. at Central Maryland Rehabilitation in Columbia; Aug. 3, 9 a.m-12:30 p.m., at the Hartwick Building in College Park and Aug. 10, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Kernan Physical Therapy, in Woodlawn. Basketball

Dr. Mike Caprarola's All-Star Basketball Summer Camp will be held at Atholton High School. Baseball

The regular meeting of "Talkin' Baseball" will be Sat., June 14 at 9 a.m. at the Owen Brown Community Center. Mark Pattison, Tom Hanrahan and Joe Haardy will talk about the unique Baseball Survivor.

High school baseball players graduating in 2009, 2010 or 2011 with an interest in playing college baseball, should reserve a spot at the sixth annual Mid-Atlantic High School Baseball Classic. Workouts are scheduled for Aug. 1, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., at Joe Cannon Stadium, in Severn. The game, the Crab Claw Classic, will be held the next day, also at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Marriotts Ridge High School Boosters are sponsoring summer sports camps for current third- through eighth-graders. Jump rope

The Kangaroo Kids will hold jump rope workshops July 2 and 3, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 10001 Route 108, Columbia. Jumpers must be at least 6 years old and should wear comfortable shorts (no jeans), a shirt and aerobic-type shoes (no sandals). Cost: $40, payable by cash or check at the workshop.
