Lacrosse

M&D Lacrosse

June 15, the Howard County-based M&D 2012 Black girls' team captured the Charm City Championship upsetting a powerful TLC 2011 team, 5-4, in the semifinals, and then defeated TLC 2012, 5-1, for the title.

At the National Draw championship, June 21-22 in Marlton, N.J., 2012 Black won eight games over a two-day period before defeating the Skywalkers, 6-5, in the championship. Howard County residents on 2012 Black include Taylor Cummings, Katie Ferraro, Molly Fleming, Lauren Lea, Elise Liberto, Meghan Milani, Kelly Phelan, Katie Schaaf, Megan Wallenhorst and Anne Zabel.

Running

Howard County Striders

Christine Josey and Heidi Vecera finished 1-2 in the Howard County Striders' first Summer Sizzler two-mile weekly race at Lake Elkhorn June 17. Luis Diaz was first overall. Patricia Zerfas finished first among the women and sixth overall (43:02) in the 10k. Karsten Brown had the only sub-40 minute time with his 37:50 finish. Top finishers:

Damien's 5k

The 2008 Damien's 5k was held at the Columbia Gateway Office Park on June 22. The race raises funds for promoting awareness of drug abuse by teens. The event also featured a 1-mile "walk and talk" where parents and children could discuss personal issues.

Centennial Fun Run

Great weather and a colorful balloon arch over the start/finish greeted Centennial Fun Runners as they kicked off the summer series. More than 200 participants covered the hilly 1-mile course, some have run every year since the Fun Run started 30 years ago.

Luis Diaz won in 5:05 and not far behind was River Hill rising sophomore Anna Demaree, who led the women with a 5:29 finish.

More than $400 was collected for the American Cancer Society in memory of two dear neighbors, Alice Barrows and Donald Dixon.

The next Fun Run will be July 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Centennial neighborhood. For additional information, call 410-465-7735.

Baseball

Savage travel

The Savage 10-U team won the MABA regular season championship with an impressive 23-1 record. Savage also won five straight games this past weekend to win the end of season tournament.

Soccer

Columbia Soccer Club travel

Two split-squads from the Columbia Soccer Club Storm Runners (U-12 girls) participated in the annual McSoccerfest tournament June 22. Each team reached the championship games of its respective bracket with one team bringing home the title and the other ending the day as the runner-up.

The champs used a balanced offense, led by Julie Delmont, Katherine MacKie, Eliza Stubbings and Carley Noppinger, and the strong defense of Erica Noppinger and Gabriella Stegall to dominate their bracket, scoring 16 goals over four games while allowing only seven.

The runners-up Storm Runners were led in scoring by Christina Kochanski, Julia Bryant and Imani Lipscomb, the defense of Vivian Yang and strong play of Sarah Levin and Katrina Vickers.

Softball

Savage

The Savage Mets (12-U) ended their regular season 10-0, beating the EYO Riptide, 11-10, in the championship game on June 12.

The Savage team members include Sarah Blough, Emily Cerwonka, Elyssa Fleischman, Cassandra Gutierrez, Meg Lawrence, Amanda Petersen, Emily Petersen, Jill Purdy, Shelby Roseman, Jena Rutten, Christy Smith, Katelynn Spingola and Jessica Throwe.

HCYP Patriots travel

The Howard County Youth Program Patriots Blue (16-U girls fast pitch) won the Easton Invitational Tournament June 8. After winning the first three games by a combined score of 24-1, highlighted by a Lillie Happel shutout in game one and a four-inning perfect game by Sara Thacker in game two, the Patriots Blue beat a tough Delaware Maddness in a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind win to clinch the No. 1 seed advancing to the championship game. Cara Woods' two-out triple scored Shayna Popkin with the tying run. Amanda Harrison's clutch single drove Woods home with the go-ahead run, and Thacker set the Maddness down in order to close out the win.

The championship game was a re-match against the Delaware Maddness. The Patriots' bats were quiet until the fifth inning when Shayna Popkin's sharp single to left scored Kat Correa and a sliding Jen Folger to knot the game at 2-2. Happel doubled off of the left field fence and Katie McCarthy followed with a single scoring pinch runner Delaney Lockhart to put the Patriots in the lead.

In the top of the seventh the Maddness took a 4-3 lead. Kelsey Littlejohn led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. One out later, with runners on second and third, Popkin singled up the middle to tie the game, 5-all. With two outs, Harrison came through again with a single to score Christina Neidlinger with the championship-game-winning run.

Western Howard County Fever

The Western Howard County Fever (14-U girls) won the ASA Maryland State Championship on June 8 at Love Point Park, on Kent Island. The Fever lost its first game of the double-elimination tournament and had to win seven consecutive games to win the tournament.

The Fever was led by the pitching of Haylie Goheen, Amanda Segrist and Ashton Maseth. The trio combined to allow only 15 earned runs during the tournament.

The team's hitting was led by Ali Braun (.533), Erica Makar (.500), Hannah Braun (.423) and Kylie Pritchard (8 RBIs).

The Fever was led defensively by its outfield of Melanie Slayton, Stephanie McGowan and Allie James.

The team has won four tournament titles thus far this year and has a combined record of 26-5.
